Pagano Smacks Three Hits; Bulldogs Fall 6-3

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Despite leading for six innings and Carmine Pagano collecting three hits, the UNC Asheville baseball team dropped a 6-3 decision to North Carolina Central on Wednesday night at Greenwood Field.

Highlights
Making his first start of the year, Joe Zayatz held NC Central to a quiet first inning, which included a pair of groundouts to first base.
The Bulldog offense backed the senior's solid first inning with a run off three hits in the home half of the first. Zayatz smacked a single to right field, and Pagano followed with a bunt base hit to put two Bulldogs on base. After a strikeout, the duo advanced 90 feet thanks to a wild pitch. Danny Wilson capitalized with a single through the left side to give Asheville the 1-0 lead.
Neither team found momentum from the second to fourth innings. In fact, four Bulldog pitchers – Beau Nichols, Trey Jernigan, Ethan Tressler and Jesse Juday – didn't allow a hit in the four-inning stretch.
In the top of the fifth inning, North Carolina Central earned its first lead of the game, 2-1, as it totaled two runs off two hits.
UNC Asheville quickly answered in the bottom of the same inning, as it earned a pair of runs thanks to a hit and an Eagle error. Greg Gasparro reached base via a fielding error to start the inning, and he moved up to second thanks to a sacrifice bunt from Andrew Friedholm. Zayatz walked to reach base again safely, and Pagano plated both of his teammates to take the 3-2 lead.
After a quiet sixth inning for both squads, the Eagles blew the game open with a four-run seventh. Corey Joyce smacked a one-out, two-RBI single, and after a Bulldog pitching change, Zach Michalski connected with a two-RBI double to give the Eagles the 5-3 advantage. Dominc Cuevas capped off the inning with a RBI single to extend NC Central's lead to three runs.
The four-run insurance inning proved vital for the Eagles, as the Bulldogs couldn't retaliate in the final three innings of the contest.
Pagano had an outstanding night at the plate, as he smacked a trio of hits en route to tallying two RBIs. Wilson tacked on a hit, as he collected the team's third RBI of the game. Joe Zayatz reached base safely in every at-bat, as he tallied a single, two runs scored and a pair of walks.
UNC Asheville sent out 10 different pitchers in the nine-inning game, and seven of those pitchers tossed a scoreless outing. Zayatz, Nichols, Jernigan and Tressler all worked a scoreless appearance to start the game. Cody Wilson only allowed a hit in his 1.1 innings of work, and Tripp Barfield and Kole Harris closed the game by each working an inning without allowing a hit.
UNC Asheville falls to 10-30 overall, and NC Central moves to 23-21 on the year.
