UNC Asheville Opens Home Schedule Tuesday Versus Boston College; Travels to Appalachian State Wednesday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville baseball plays two games this week, including its home opener against ACC-member Boston College on Tuesday, March 6, at Greenwood Field at 4 p.m. The Bulldogs will cap off their mid-week games with a trip to Appalachian State on Wednesday at Beaver Field, which begins at 5 p.m.

About the Bulldogs
UNC Asheville enters Tuesday's contest with a 2-8 overall record, as all 10 games have been played on the road. Tuesday's game marks the first home game for the Bulldogs, and last year, UNC Asheville went 12-11 at Greenwood Field, which marked the best home finish since the 2012 season when the Bulldogs went 13-12.
Last weekend at No. 5 Florida State, the Bulldogs went 0-3, but in the final two games of the series versus the nationally-ranked Seminoles, the Bulldogs only lost 4-3 and 4-2. The Bulldogs nearly pulled off the upset on Saturday, when they tied the game at 3-3 late in the contest, but the Seminoles posted a walk-off hit in the bottom of the ninth.
In the FSU series, Carmine Pagano posted a lot of success against the No. 5 team in the country, as the junior shortstop posted two multi-hit games. He paced UNC Asheville with four total hits and two RBIs.
As a team, the Bulldogs recorded six doubles and a home run. Joe Zayatz posted the lone home run of the week, while Kole Harris tallied two of the six Bulldog doubles.
Seven Bulldogs had scoreless outings against No. 5 Florida State. Leading the surge were relievers Jesse Juday and Nick Boyles. Both Bulldogs made two appearances and did not surrender a run.
Jordan Carr had the best starting pitching performance for the Bulldogs, as he tossed 5.1 innings, struck out two and allowed three runs on Sunday versus the Noles.
Scouting Boston College
The Eagles enter the mid-week series with a 4-5 overall mark and a 2-1 record in true road games this year. Boston College is fresh off a three-game series in Cary, N.C., where the Eagles defeated Niagra, 11-3, but lost to Bryant, 9-8, and Army, 11-1.
BC has four players hitting over .300 this season. Chris Galland leads the squad, as he is hitting at a .600 mark this season. Galland has a pair of doubles and five RBIs in four starts. Brian Dempsey is hitting at a .419 clip, as he has started in all nine games. He leads the team in hits with 13, and he is second on the squad with eight RBIs.
Boston College has a pair of key relievers this year in Thomas Lane and Sean Hughes, as they have both appeared in five games this year. Lane has twirled 10 innings, and he leads the team with a 0.90 ERA. Hughes has also appeared in five games, where he has struck out six and allowed just one earned run.
The Bulldogs will face Gill, who has appeared in three game this year. The sophomore has a 6.00 ERA, and he has tossed three total innings, where he has allowed two runs and one walk.
About Appalachian State
Prior to its Tuesday's showdown with South Carolina, Appalachian State has a 4-6 overall record and a 1-2 mark at Beaver Stadium. The Mountaineers are currently on a two-game losing streak, as they dropped a doubleheader to Marshall on Sunday at home.
As a team, Appalachian State is hitting at a .233 clip. Two Mountaineers - Alex Leshock and Kendall McGowan - are hitting above .300. Leshock, who has started in seven of the 10 games, has nine total hits, as three have gone for extra-bases. McGowan has started six contests this year, as he has six total hits and four RBIs. Jason Avers has started all 10 games for the Mountaineers, and he is tied for the team-lead with 10 total hits and three doubles.
Luke Watts is one of the most consistent relievers for ASU, as he has appeared in five games and has tallied two saves. He has totaled 7.1 innings of work, while scattering six hits and allowing three runs.
