UNC Asheville’s Bid for Third Straight Big South Tournament Title Falls Just Short

LYNCHBURG, Va. – UNC Asheville's bid for a third consecutive Big South Tournament title fell just short in a 60-42 loss to top-seeded Liberty on Sunday, March 11, at the Vines Center.

Game Highlights
Third-seeded UNC Asheville would commence the championship game on a 7-0 run that was punctuated by a tough floater by Zip Scott with just under seven minutes remaining in the first quarter.
The Bulldogs would lead 10-2 after an Ali Trani three-pointer with 5:47 to play in the opening quarter, but Liberty would go on a 7-0 run over the next few minutes to pull within one at 10-9 with 1:31 left in the first quarter.
Asheville would hold that same 10-9 advantage entering the second quarter.
The Bulldogs would start the second quarter on a 6-3 run to own a 16-12 lead with 7:40 remaining in the first half.
Liberty would go on a 5-0 run from there though to take its first lead of the game at 17-16 with 6:12 left in the second quarter.
The Bulldogs would take the lead back at 19-17 with 3:19 left in the first half when Trani knocked down another three-pointer.
The first half would conclude with Liberty taking a narrow 23-21 lead into intermission.
UNC Asheville as a team shot 34.8 percent (8-of-23) in the first half, while Liberty shot 32.1 percent (9-of-28) from the field in the opening half of action.
The Bulldogs would tie things up at 23-all to start off the second half with a Khaila Webb layup.
Liberty would lead by as many as eight in the third quarter, but UNC Asheville cut the advantage in half to 35-31 after a Bronaza Fitzgerald layup with 2:19 to play in the third quarter.
The Flames would take a five-point lead of 39-34 into the fourth quarter.
Liberty would hold on from there in its 18-point win.
An All-Tournament selection, Webb led the Bulldogs with 13 points in the contest.
Fitzgerald was also named an All-Tournament choice.
Liberty was led by three in double figures with Ashtyn Baker leading the way with 12 points.
UNC Asheville finished its loss to the Flames shooting 29.8 percent (14-of-47) as a team. Liberty shot 37.5 percent (21-of-56) as a team.
The Bulldogs with the loss dropped to 17-15, while Liberty improved to 24-9.
