Strong First Half Pushes Bulldogs Past Eagles 63-51

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Three Bulldogs posted double-digits in points as UNC Asheville women's basketball downed Winthrop 63-51 on Saturday afternoon inside Kimmel Arena.

The win marked the seventh victory in the last eight games for the Bulldogs as they move into sole possession of second place in the Big South Conference.

Game Highlights

After three minutes of play, the Bulldogs posted an 11-0 run to go up 13-4. Winthrop pulled the deficit to only five points (20-15) as it ended the first quarter with a three-pointer.

After exchanging baskets for half of the second quarter, the Bulldogs posted an 8-0 run to carry a 34-23 lead into halftime. 

At the intermission, junior guard Jessica Wall was pacing Asheville with 10 points on 4-for-7 shooting including 2-for-4 behind the three-point arc. Zip Scott added seven points on 3-for-7 shooting, and Khaila Webb contributed six points after making three field goals. 

The Bulldogs saw their largest lead of the contest (21 points) as they opened the second half on a 10-0 run. Winthrop pulled the deficit to 14 points (47-33) as it out-scored Asheville 10-3 to end the third quarter.

Neither team found momentum in the final stanza as both squads exchanged baskets in the final 10 minutes. The Bulldogs led by double-digits for over nine minutes in the fourth quarter, and they ended the contest with a 12-point victory (63-51).

Three Bulldogs posted double-figures in points - Scott (15), Webb (14) and Wall (12). All three Bulldogs also made at least five field goals as Webb led the way with six made baskets. Scott and Webb combined to go 6-for-6 from the free-throw line, and Webb totaled a game-high four assists in the 12-point victory. Wall tallied a game-high four steals in 35 minutes of play.

Red-shirt junior Tiffany Wilson dropped eight points including a game-high 11 rebounds. The 11 rebounds was only one shy of matching a single-game career high for the forward.

Bronaza Fitzgerald tallied a pair of blocks, and Kelli Fisher, Brooke Jordan-Brown and Wilson each blocked one shot. 

UNC Asheville had a narrow 17-14 edge in points off turnovers and two-point favorite in points in the paint (32-30). The Bulldogs also posted 12 points off the bench and 10 fast break points. 

Asheville was either leading or tied for 37:33 minutes in the contest. As a team, it shot .424 percent and limited the Eagles to .344 percent. Winthrop only made three 3-pointers on 13 attempts while Asheville shot .364 percent behind the three-point arc.

For the first time this season, UNC Asheville moves above .500 as it is now 11-10 overall and 8-2 in Big South Conference contests. Winthrop falls to 2-19 overall and 1-9 in league games.

The Bulldogs conclude their two-game home stretch on Tuesday, Feb. 6 as they play host to Radford. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. inside Kimmel Arena.
