Last Time Out
Three Bulldogs posted double-digits in points on Feb. 3 as UNC Asheville women's basketball downed Winthrop 63-51 inside Kimmel Arena.Â
Zip Scott (15), Khaila Webb (14) and Jessica Wall (12) were the three Bulldogs that were in double-figures. The trio made at least five field goals as Webb led the way with six made baskets. Scott and Webb combined to go 6-for-6 from the free-throw line, and Webb totaled a game-high four assists in the 12-point victory. Wall tallied a game-high four steals in 35 minutes of play.Â
Red-shirt junior Tiffany Wilson dropped eight points including a game-high 11 rebounds. The 11 rebounds was only one shy of matching a single-game career high for the forward.Â
Bronaza Fitzgerald tallied a pair of blocks, and Kelli Fisher, Brooke Jordan-Brown and Wilson each blocked one shot.Â
UNC Asheville had a narrow 17-14 edge in points off turnovers and two-point favorite in points in the paint (32-30). The Bulldogs also posted 12 points off the bench and 10 fast break points.Â
Asheville was either leading or tied for 37:33 minutes in the contest. As a team, it shot .424 percent and limited the Eagles to .344 percent. Winthrop only made three 3-pointers on 13 attempts while Asheville shot .364 percent behind the three-point arc.Â
Winning Is In Their Blood
Winners of seven in the last eight games, the Bulldogs are now in sole possession of second place in the Big South Conference standings.
In that stretch, the Bulldogs have recorded a recipe for winning: don't turn the ball over, force turnovers, don't foul, get to the free-throw line and grab loose balls. Despite making 35 more field goals on five fewer attempts than their opponents, the Bulldogs have converted on 32 more free throws, grabbed 52 more rebounds, committed 15 fewer turnovers, forced 20 more steals and committed 15 fewer turnovers.
In the same stretch, the Bulldogs are averaging 67.9 points per game (ppg) and holding opponents to 55.6 ppg (+12.3 scoring margin). They are also averaging 4.0 more free-throws made per game and out-rebounding opponents by 6.5 on average.Â
Webb has averaged 15.5 ppg, and Fitzgerald has posted 14.1 ppg and 10.6 rebounds per game in the last eight contests. Wall is averaging 10.8 ppg as she is 20-for-49 behind the three-point arc.
Scouting the Highlanders
Radford is 14-7 overall this season and 7-3 in Big South Conference games. Since its loss to UNC Asheville on Jan. 9, Radford is 6-1 in its last seven games including solid wins over High Point, Campbell and Presbyterian.Â
Despite only starting three games this year and appearing in 19, Destinee Walker is the Highlanders' leading scorer at 11.9 points per game. The two other Highlanders that average double-figures in points per game are Jayda Worthy (11.6) and Khiana Johnson (10.1). Worthy has grabbed 120 rebounds this year and has shot an impressive .525 percent from the field (95-for-181). Janayla White and Lydia Rivers pace the team in rebounds per game as the duo each averages 8.0 rpg. Rivers leads the team with 39 blocks, and White has connected with 27 blocks this year. Â
All-Time History Versus Radford
Tuesday's contest marks the 70th all-time meeting between the two clubs. Despite Radford owning a 48-21 advantage on Asheville, the Bulldogs have won two straight games over the Highlanders - the 2016 Big South Conference Championship game and a 67-56 road victory earlier this year that ended Radford's 21-game home winning streak.
In the game earlier this season, the Bulldogs had three players post in double-figures as Webb led the way. The senior guard netted 20 points as she went 7-for-19 from the field including 6-for-7 from the free-throw line. Wall added 14 points on 6-for-9 shooting and four assists, and Fitzgerald tallied 13 points on 4-for-5 shooting.Â
