Fitzgerald, Scott and Corpening Have Career Days as UNC Asheville Stymies Winthrop 70-48

ROCK HILL, S.C. – With career days from Bronaza Fitzgerald, Zip Scott and Amaryah Corpening, the UNC Asheville women's basketball team stymied Winthrop 70-48 on Saturday afternoon as the Bulldogs have now claimed four straight Big South Conference contests.

Asheville opened the game with a 4-0 advantage, but the two teams exchanged baskets for the following two and a half minutes. The Bulldogs started to pull away with four minutes remaining in the first quarter as they went on a 12-0 run to conclude the first 10 minutes of play. During that run, Fitzgerald scored half of the team's points, and Jessica Wall drilled a three pointer from the right corner to cap off the scoring run.
The Bulldogs continued their hot hand as they opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 27-7 lead. Asheville pushed its lead to 21 points with two and a half minutes left, but the Eagles netted six unanswered points to make it a 32-17 game at half.
At halftime , Fitzgerald, who has nine career double-doubles, was only one point away from tallying her fifth of her senior season. She had nine points to go along with 11 rebounds at the half to pace the Bulldogs. The Danville, Va. native had seven defensive boards as she went 3-for-5 from the field.
Scott had nine points in the first two quarters as the junior was nearly perfect from the field (4-for-5). Wall poured in five points as she tallied two steals and a pair of assists in 15 minutes of action.
UNC Asheville continued its dominance in the contest as it shot 10-for-15 (.667 percent) from the field in the third quarter. The Bulldogs went a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line as Fitzgerald, Corpening and Ali Trani combined for the six points. Starting at the 3:38 mark in the stanza, the Bulldogs went on a 12-0 run including making five straight baskets. Behind the big Asheville run, the Bulldogs saw its largest lead of the game (59-24) with 23 seconds remaining in the quarter.
Winthrop concluded the final 10 minutes of action out-scoring Asheville 22-11, but it was not enough as the Bulldogs claimed the 70-48 victory in Winthrop Coliseum.
Fitzgerald notched two single-game career bests as she totaled 20 points and 17 rebounds. She was five rebounds away from matching a UNC Asheville's Division I single game record, which Kelli Riles set at Radford during the 2010-11 season. Fitzgerald concluded the game going 7-for-11 from the field as she matched a single-game career high in field goals made. With two career-best marks in points and rebounds, she recorded her 10th career double-double.
Scott poured in a career-best 13 points as she went 6-for-9 from the field. The six made field goals bested her previous career best by one. She added six rebounds and a pair of assists in the 22-point victory. Corpening, who scored seven of her points in the second half, broke a personal best by netting nine points. The freshman also went a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe, which is also a new personal record for the Morganton, N.C. native.
Wall finished the contest with nine points as she shot 50 percent from the field (4-for-8), and senior forward Tiffany Wilson grabbed six rebounds and a pair of steals. Khaila Webb, Brooke Jordan-Brown and Trani all tallied a pair of field goals in the contest.
Winner's of four straight games, UNC Asheville moves to 8-9 overall and 5-1 in Big South play, and Winthrop falls to 1-16 overall and 0-6 in the league.
