Bulldogs Post First Clean Sheet in Big South Conference Play

10.07.2017 | Women's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Behind UNC Asheville's first clean sheet in Big South Conference play, the Bulldogs claimed a 1-0 victory on Saturday as senior forward Caroline Houser scored the decisive goal in the 11th minute for her 19th goal of her career.

BULLDOG BITES

Milestones and Notables
The shutout was Asheville's first league clean sheet and first shutout at home this year.

The Bulldog defense limited High Point to one shot on frame, which was a season low for the Asheville backline.

With Houser's decisive goal in the match, she has now scored a goal in back-to-back matches for UNC Asheville. Also with her goal on Saturday, she netted her 19th career goal, which puts her tied for 9th in program history.

With the victory, Asheville handed High Point its first Big South loss of the season.
With the assist on Houser's goal, Courtney Naber earned her first assist of the season and the fourth of her career.

How It Happened

Both teams went back-and-forth in the first few minutes, but Naber put the pressure on in the 7th minute as she put the game's first shot on goal. However, the Big South Preseason Defensive Player of the Year Alex Hank made the save to keep the game level.

Houser netted the lone goal of the match four minutes later as she scored her third goal of the season. Naber fed a through pass in the Bulldogs' attacking half, which found the foot of Houser. The Chapel Hill, N.C. native then slipped the ball into the bottom-left corner to give the Bulldogs the early 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs held the Panther offense in-check as High Point wasn't able to get off a shot until the 35th minute, but the attempt was blocked. Just seconds later, the Panthers connected with their lone shot on goal as UNC Asheville goalkeeper Bryson Lee made the save.

Heading into the half, HPU out-shot Asheville 4-2, but the Bulldogs were leading on the scoreboard, 1-0, after the first 45 minutes.

UNC Asheville had several chances 10-12 minutes into the second half as Houser struck her second shot on frame, and in the 56th minute, her twin sister Emma Houser recorded her first shot on goal in the match.

One of the best chances for the Bulldogs to double their lead came just over a minute after Emma Houser's shot attempt as Naber struck a right-footed attempt from outside of the 18-yard box. However, the shot sailed inches above the crossbar.

Neither team could find the net in the second half, but HPU threatened late in the match as it took a pair of corners with four minutes remaining in regulation.

With Asheville's win, it advances to 6-6-1 overall and 2-2 in the Big South, and High Point drops to 6-7-1 overall and 3-1-1 in league play.
