ASHEVILLE, N.C. – In UNC Asheville's first Big South Conference victory of the year, the women's soccer team defeated Presbyterian 4-3 as sophomore defender Erika Snyder netted her first career goal, which was the game-winner in the 89th minute, and head coach Michelle Demko claimed her 50th career victory on Wednesday at Greenwood Field.
BULLDOG BITES
Milestones and Notables
Erika Snyder drilled the game-winning goal with just over a minute remaining in the match to seal the 4-3 victory for the Bulldogs. The goal was the sophomore's first goal of her career.
The victory on Wednesday was Demko's 50th career victory as a head coach.
With the assist on Asheville's third goal, it was Emily Dueñas' first career assist and point.
Senior defender Katie Tuorto scored her first goal of the season and the second in her career. Her first career goal came in 2014 during her freshman campaign.
Caroline Houser scored the second goal of the game, which was her 18th goal of her career. With the assist on Houser's goal, Alison Kurucz tallied her second assist this year.
The Bulldogs netted four goals, which came from four different players. The last time the Bulldogs netted at least four goals from four different players was last year versus South Carolina State when Emma Houser, Caroline Houser, Gretchen Dettlinger and Rachel Snyder each tallied a goal.
Erika Synder's goal in the 89th minute was the latest game-winner scored by Asheville this year in regulation time.
How It Happened
The Bulldogs came out firing early as they took three shots and earned four corners within the first 15 minutes of kickoff.
Halfway through the first 45 minutes, Asheville had several chances to find the net as they recorded three more corners and had two solid looks at goal from Rachel Snyder and Emma Houser.
Despite having the momentum early, Presbyterian found the back of the net first as Kristen Bane headed in a corner kick at the near post in the 38th minute.
The Bulldogs quickly changed the momentum as Tuorto scored her first goal of the season and the second of her career. UNC Asheville was awarded a free kick at midfield in the 40th minute. The senior defender took the kick and placed it in the 18-yard box. The PC goalkeeper attacked the ball, but it bounced over her head and slowly trickled into the net to knot the game at 1-1.
UNC Asheville didn't waste time to take its first lead of the match as Caroline Houser found the back of the net three minutes later. Kurucz fed a pass to her right to Caroline Houser, and the senior forward drilled the middle of the net to give the Bulldogs the 2-1 lead.
At halftime, UNC Asheville out-shot Presbyterian 7-3 including putting 3-1 on frame and posted five more corners than the Blue Hose.
The Bulldogs doubled their lead six minutes into the second half as freshman forward Skyler Chillson beat the Presbyterian goalkeeper in a one-versus-one situation. Dueñas fed a long through ball at midfield to her teammate, which gave the midfielder her first collegiate point.
After battling back-and-forth for 20 minutes, the Blue Hose cut the deficit in half as Fraces Whitesides scored her second goal of the year. In the 83rd minute, Presbyterian tied the game for a second time as Samantha Britt tapped-in the game-tying goal late in the match.
With time winding down, the Bulldogs had a solid chance with a minute and a half remaining on the clock. Bella Iorio took the corner from the right side. She put a cross in the middle of the box, and after bouncing around for several seconds, a PC defender attempted to clear the ball. The clearance didn't go far as Erika Snyder corralled the ball just outside of the 18-yard box. She connected with the ball and drilled the left side of the net to give the Bulldogs the 4-3 victory at home.
UNC Asheville advances to 5-6-1 overall and 1-2 in the Big South, and Presbyterian drops to 2-9 overall and 0-4 in league play.
