Bulldogs Fall at Furman in the Ninth

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman plated three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, including a two-run walkoff home run, to send visiting UNC Asheville to a 8-6 loss in the first of back-to-back midweek road contests for the Bulldogs.
THE TURNING POINT
Trailing entering the final inning, Asheville plated two runs in the top of the ninth, via a wild pitch and sacrifice fly, to take a one-run lead to the bottom of the ninth, where Furman's RBI single tied the game before a two-out, two-run homer over the left-center field wall sent the hosts home a winner.
NOTABLES
-Asheville tallied 13 total hits, six more than Furman, and was led by three-hit performances from Carmine Pagano and Joe Tietjen. Scott Kobos and Alex Baratta each tallied two hits as five different Bulldogs finished with one RBI each.
-Tietjen collected his sixth double of the season in the top of the sixth inning, extending his team-high in the category. It was the only extra base hit for the Bulldogs in the game.
-Asheville left 15 men on base in the loss, including leaving the bases loaded in the first inning and stranding two runners in five other innings.
-Tyler Hughes was saddled with the loss, allowing two runs on two hits over two innings of work into the ninth inning. Starter Austin Fahr didn't factor in the decision, going two innings and allowing one hit, one walk and one run with a single strikeout. Parker Swindell was the first Bulldog out of the bullpen and tossed four innings, allowing four runs while striking out five batters over that stretch.
-Each team began its scoring in the second inning, with the Bulldogs using Kyle Carruthers' sacrifice fly to take a short lead before Furman answered in the bottom of the frame with a leadoff home run.
-Furman posted three runs in the bottom of the third inning to stake itself to a lead via an RBI triple and a two-run inside the park home run. Asheville responded with a single run in the next three innings, including an RBI single by Pagano in the fourth, a Justin Woods RBI single in the fifth and Teitjen's RBI double in the sixth frame.
-The hosts retook the lead with a single run in the bottom of the seventh inning, using a RBI groundout to push across the run.
-Asheville scored two runs in the top of the ninth, beginning with Scott Kobos opening the frame being hit by a pitch before later coming around and scoring via a wild pitch. Carruthers, who reached on a single, gave the Bulldogs the lead later in the inning on Lucas Owens' sacrifice fly to set up the Furman bottom of the ninth.

-Following today's loss, Asheville ends the midweek road trip by taking on Appalachian State on Wednesday in Forest City, N.C. at 4:00 p.m.
