FOREST CITY, N.C. – One big inning pushed Appalachian State past UNC Asheville on Wednesday afternoon, with a five-run seventh inning opening up a tight game as the Bulldogs fell 8-0 on the second day of back-to-back midweek games for Asheville.
THE TURNING POINT
Leading by three entering the seventh inning, Appalachian State plated five runs on three hits, including a two-run homer and two-run single, to break the game open. Asheville finished with four hits and six runners stranded, while Appalachian State had only five hits but left 12 men on base.
NOTABLES
-Asheville had four players collect one hit each, with Lucas Owens tallying a double playing in his hometown, while Pete Guy, Joe Tietjen and Scott Kobos each added a hit as well.
-Spencer Orr started for the Bulldogs and was saddled with his first loss of the season, tossing two innings and allowing one run on one hit with a strikeout and two walks. Zach Greene pitched three scoreless innings before four Asheville pitchers combined for the final three innings, allowing seven runs on four hits and nine walks.
-Appalachian State started the scoring in the first inning, plating a run via a bases loaded walk before adding two runs in the sixth frame two additional bases loaded walks.
