ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville jumped out of the gates with four runs in the bottom of the first inning but saw visiting Iona score six of the final seven runs on the afternoon as the Bulldogs fell 6-5 on Friday afternoon in the first game of the teams' weekend series.
Due to forecasted precipitation on Sunday, the teams will now wrap up their series with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. with game two to follow.
THE TURNING POINT
Trailing by one entering the ninth inning, Iona scored two runs on three hits in the ninth inning, with the first three batters reaching to open the frame that featured an RBI single and a sacrifice fly as the run producing plays.
NOTABLES
-Kyle Carruthers and Alex Baratta tallied two hits each to combine for four of Asheville's six total hits, while each drove in a run and Carruthers also had two stolen bases.
-Starter Jordan Fulbright tossed eight-plus innings, allowing 10 hits and being saddled with all six runs. He added three strikeouts and had no walks in the performance.
-The Bulldogs sent eight men to the plate in the bottom of the first inning, collecting four runs on three hits and the help of one Iona error, as all four runs came with two outs in the frame. Asheville got on the board via a passed ball before the throwing error brought in two additional runs. Carruthers' RBI single up the middle capped the scoring in the frame.
-Iona tallied four runs on six hits in the fourth inning to tie the game, also doing all of its scoring with two outs. The visitors had a pair of RBI singles and a third base hit that drove in two runs in the inning.
-Asheville regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Carruthers was hit by a pitch and stole second and third bases before scoring on Baratta's RBI single into center field.
-In the Iona ninth, the visitors began the frame with a single and double to set up the game-tying RBI single before a one-out sacrifice fly plated what proved to be the winning run.
