ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Visiting Iona tallied 30 total hits across both games of Saturday's doubleheader, coming from behind to hand UNC Asheville a 10-9 loss in the first game of the afternoon before the Bulldogs fell 14-4 in the nightcap.

 

THE TURNING POINT

The Bulldogs left 14 men on base across the two games, while Iona scored six runs in game one to take control and rolled that over to game two, scoring 10 runs in the first three innings to grab control.

 

NOTABLES

-Joe Tietjen finished with four total hits on the afternoon for the Bulldogs, including a double and home run, while driving in three runs. Derek Smith and Danny Wilson each tallied three total hits, while Smith connecting on a double and five total RBI while Wilson drove in two runs of his own.

 

-Freshman Jordan Carr did not factor into the game one decision after tossing six innings and leaving with the lead after allowing three runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Lucas Clarke (0-2) was saddled with the game one loss, the fifth reliever Asheville used in game one.

 

-The second game saw starter Parker Swindell allow five runs on six hits over the opening 1 2/3 innings to get stuck with the loss. Overall, the Bulldogs used 12 pitchers over the 18 innings.

 

-In game one, Asheville scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning, using Kyle Carruthers' RBI single and Smith's two-run single to take the early lead. After Iona tied the game with a pair of runs in the third inning, the Bulldogs responded with a four-run fifth frame, highlighted by RBIs from Wilson, Scott Kobos and Smith before adding another run on Smith's RBI double in the seventh inning.

 

-Iona plated six runs in the top of the eighth inning on six hits to take the lead before the Bulldogs tied the game in the bottom of the eighth inning on Wilson's RBI single. Iona's RBI single in the ninth held on to be the winning run.

 

-The second game saw Iona jump out to 10 runs on 12 hits in the first three innings before the Bulldogs responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third inning via Smith's groundout and Tietjen's RBI single.

 

-Iona added a single run on the sixth and three more in the seventh inning before Asheville tallied two runs in the bottom of the seventh on Tietjen's two-run home to left field that brought the game to its final score.

 

UP NEXT

-Following today's games, the Bulldogs now prepare for a Tuesday night contest against Tennessee that will be played at McCormick Field in downtown Asheville.
