ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Shonese Jones and Tiffany Wilson scored 10 points each to lead UNC Asheville to a hard-fought 59-46 Big South Conference home victory over Presbyterian College Saturday afternoon at Kimmel Arena.
The win was Asheville's (6-15, 5-7 BSC) third in the last five games. PC fell to 11-10 overall and 6-6 in the Big South.
The Bulldogs were helped by the play of senior guard Tacey Trammel. Trammel knocked down three consecutive treys midway through the second half to break open a close game and give the home team some breathing room
Presbyterian College was led by a game-high 13 points from Keyonna Allen and 11 from Jamie Miles.
The big stat in the game was rebounds. Asheville out-rebounded the Blue Hose, 41-23 and had 20 offensive rebounds to just seven for PC.
The Bulldogs dominated the first 15 minutes of the opening half. Asheville used a dominating rebounding advantage to surge to a 28-10 lead. Weaver scored eight points on 4-of-4 shooting as the Blue & White had a 17-2 rebounding edge with five minutes to go in the half.
PC rallied in the final five minutes as the Blue Hose went on a 13-2 run to end half and cut the Bulldog lead to 30-23 at halftime. Asheville ended the first half with a 21-11 rebounding advantage and a 13-2 edge in second-chance points.
Leading 37-31 midway through the second half, Trammel connected on treys on three consecutive possessions to expand the Asheville lead to 46-33.
The nine points scored by the senior from Robbinsville is a season-high. PC could get no closer than nine the rest of the game as the Bulldogs went 7-of-8 from the free throw line in the final two minutes of the contest.
