Bulldogs Suffer 70-57 Setback at Charleston Southern

02.02.2015 | Women's Basketball

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team missed 20 free throws and lost on the road at Charleston Southern, 70-57 on Monday night at the Buccaneer Field House.

Asheville falls to 6-16 for the year and 5-8 in Big South action, while Charleston Southern (5-15, 1-11 BSC) earned its first conference and Division I win of the year.

“Simply put, Charleston Southern outplayed us tonight,” stated head coach Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick.  “We were not sharp from start to finish which was surprising after playing well on Saturday and practicing well last night.  We also had our opportunities at the free throw line and missed 20, some of those being front-end of one-and-ones.  It was an ugly game and not the brand of basketball we want to be playing this time of year.  We will regroup and get ready for Longwood on Thursday.  Hats off to Charleston Southern for its effort.”

Tianna Knuckles led the Bulldogs with 11 points on the night and connected on 3-of-4 from long distance for the game.  Tiffany Wilson and KJ Weaver each registered six rebounds on the night for the Blue & White who were outrebounded by the Buccaneers 45-40, despite having a 25-20 advantage on the boards heading into the break.

Charleston Southern's Tatum Jarvis played an outstanding game, pouring in 29 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including four trifectas, and pulling down 12 rebounds.  Alyssa Mann joined Jarvis in double-figures with 17 points.

As coach Kirkpatrick eluded to, it was an ugly game in which the two teams combined for 59 fouls and 71 total free throws between the two clubs.  Asheville shot 17-for-37 from the line ( =45.9 percent), while Charleston Southern connected on 26-of-34 from the charity stripe ( =76.5).  The Bulldogs committed 17 turnovers and the Buccaneers turned the ball over 18 times.

Trailing 33-25 at the half, Asheville went on an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to two after the Buccaneers scored the opening two points of the half.  Shonese Jones hit a jumper from the right elbow, before Knuckles drained two from downtown.

CSU answered the run from the Blue & White with a 22-6 stretch to open up an 18-point lead.  Jarvis accounted for 12 points during the decisive run for the Buccaneers.

UNC Asheville will return to Kimmel Arena for two more games this week.  The Bulldogs will host Longwood on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. before hosting Winthrop on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.  Saturday's game will be broadcast live locally on My40 and will be the team's annual Pink Game for Breast Cancer Awareness.
