04.06.2011 | Baseball
DAVIDSON, N.C. – A three-run fourth inning by Davidson College gave the Wildcats the lead for good as they earned a 6-3 win over UNC Asheville on Wednesday evening at Wilson Field as the Bulldogs fall to 10-18 on the season overall.
Grier Harrington (2-5) was credited with the loss in relief, allowing three runs on four hits in two-thirds of an innings work. Brian Russell earned the win for the Wildcats, who improve to 14-14 on the year with the win. Russell threw four complete innings, allowing two runs on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
Centerfielder Danny Baatz extended his hitting streak to seven games as the senior went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run batted in and a run scored. Drew Gadaire was Davidson's offensive leader, going 3-for-5 with three RBI.
Baatz broke the scoreless tie in the top of the second when he tripled down the rightfield line to drive in Nick Collazo from first. Patrick Koontz put the Bulldogs up 2-0 a batter later, plating Baatz from third on a sacrifice fly to left.
The Wildcats would get a run back in the bottom of the second, scoring on a Sam Payne ground out to cut the lead to 2-1 after two innings.
Davidson tied the game in the fourth inning when leftfielder Forrest Brandt singled to left to drive in Payne from third. With two runners on Drew Gadaire doubled down the leftfield line to clear the bases and give the Wildcats a 4-2 lead in the fourth.
After the two teams went scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings James Cerbie grounded out with runners at second and third to give Davidson a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh. Gadaire singled in a run in the eighth to push the Wildcats' lead to four heading into the top of the ninth.
The Bulldogs tried to rally in the final frame, as Jordan Lurie doubled to left to drive in Catlin Carter and cut the Davidson lead to three. But that would be the only run Asheville could plate in the frame as they dropped the nonconference contest.
Asheville will be back in action this weekend when the Blue & White travel to take on Big South Conference foe Winthrop in a three-game series beginning on Friday.
