Winthrop Rallies For Two Runs In The Ninth, Defeats Asheville 5-4

ROCK HILL, S.C. – With two outs already recorded in the bottom of the ninth inning Winthrop's Cam Walters hit the game winning single give the Eagles a 5-4 victory over UNC Asheville, as the Bulldogs allow two runs in the final frame to fall to 4-6 in the Big South Conference.

Asheville, which falls to 10-19 overall with the loss, had a chance to snap a six-game losing skid to the Eagles after taking the lead in the eighth inning. However, Winthrop (16-14, 7-3 BSC) scored the tying run in the ninth on a fielding error by leftfielder Grant Gajdosz and then won it on a Cam Walters single one batter later.

Ryan Dull got the start for the Bulldogs and went the distance, allowing five runs (two earned) on 11 hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Eric Ruth was credited with the victory for the Eagles in relief to improve to 4-0 on the year.

Winthrop has now won seven straight against Asheville, and nine out of the last 10.

Catlin Carter went 2-for-4 from the nine spot with a run batted in for Asheville while Danny Baatz saw his hitting streak extended to eight games. Eddie Rohan led Winthrop offensively, going 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI.

Rohan drove in the first run of the game for Winthrop, singling to center with runners at the corners to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The Eagles threatened to add to their lead in the first with runners at the corners yet again, but Gajdosz gunned down a runner at the plate to keep the lead at one run.

Chas Crane put the Eagles up 2-0 with a solo homer down the rightfield line in the bottom of the third. The Bulldogs would answer in the top of the fourth, scoring a run on a Nick Collazo ground out and then another on a single to left by catcher Ian Graham

Tyler Cook broke the 2-2 tie in the fifth for Winthrop, hitting a single over the leaping Robert McIntosh to plate T.J. Olesczuk from third to put the Eagles up 3-2. Asheville's Carter tied the game at 3-3 in the seventh with a single up the middle to plate Collazo from third.

Danny Baatz gave the Bulldogs the lead in the top of the eighth, driving in McIntosh from third to put the Blue & White up 4-3. Max Vogel would tie the game in the bottom of the ninth, doubling to leftfield to drive in Justin Hopper from first. Vogel would reach third on the play and would score one batter later when Cam Walters single to short to drive in the winning run. 

Due to inclement weather expected in the Rock Hill area tomorrow, first pitch in game two of the series has been moved to 1 p.m.
