Asheville Drops Game Two To Winthrop, 10-2

ROCK HILL, S.C. – In game two of a three-game series against Big South Conference foe Winthrop the UNC Asheville baseball team lost its eighth consecutive game to the Eagles, falling by the score of 10-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Winthrop Ballpark.
The Eagles took game one last night by rallying in the ninth for two runs and with a victory tomorrow, they will have swept the Blue & White in three consecutive seasons.
With the win Winthrop improve to 17-14 on the year with an 8-3 mark in the Big South. Asheville falls to 10-20 overall and 4-7 in conference play.
Third baseman Cody Buch was the lone offensive bright spot for the Bulldogs, going 2-for-2 at the plate with a home run and a walk. The homer for Buch was his third on the year, which leads all Bulldogs. Grier Harrington was credited with the loss for Asheville, starting the game and going three innings. Harrington (2-6) allowed six runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.
Robert Lake earned the victory for the Eagles, pitching eight solid innings. Lake gave up only two runs on seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Adam Gliebe and Brett Thomas led the way offensively for the Eagles as each collected three hits and three runs batted in. Thomas hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to right in the third inning.
The two teams will close out the series tomorrow with game three. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at the Winthrop Ballpark.
Thomas drove in the game's first run, doubling down the leftfield line to plate a runner from first and give the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Thomas then advanced to third on a wild pitch and was driven home on a T.J. Olesczuk single to right-center.
While still in the second Olesczuk advanced to third on a ground out and then went home on an error by shortstop Catlin Carter. After two complete Winthrop led 3-0.
Gliebe pushed the Eagles' lead to four runs in the bottom of the third when he singled in a runner from third. One batter later Thomas homered to rightfield to push Winthrop's lead to six runs in the bottom of the third.
Winthrop added another run in the bottom of the fifth, scoring on an Olesczuk triple to right. After five complete the Eagles led 7-0. Gliebe added two more for the Eagles in the sixth when he singled in a pair of runners to push Winthrop's lead to nine runs.
After Winthrop added a run in the bottom of the seventh the Bulldogs finally got on the board in the eighth when Buch hit a solo homer to leftfield to end the shutout. The Blue & White would plate anther run in the top of the ninth on an Andrew Kirkland bases loaded single, but would be unable to score anymore runs as Winthrop earned the 10-2 victory.
