04.10.2011 | Baseball

ROCK HILL, S.C. – With runners at first and second and two outs in the top of the ninth inning, sophomore first baseman Robert McIntosh delivered a single to right-center to drive in Cody Buch from second base, giving UNC Asheville a 2-1 victory Winthrop in Big South Conference baseball action.

The win for the Bulldogs snaps an eight-game losing skid the to Eagles and is the first victory for the Blue & White over Winthrop since the 2008 season. It is also Asheville's first victory in Rock Hill since the 2002 season.

With the win Asheville improves to 11-20 overall with a 5-7 mark in conference play. Tommy Houmard got the start and was affective, allowing only one run on five hits with six strikeouts over six innings. Dillon Tabar (3-1) entered the game in the eighth and pitched two shutout innings to earn his third win of the season in relief.

Winthrop drops to 17-15 on the year and 8-4 in the Big South. Starter Matteo D'angelo was also in fine form for the Eagles, throwing six shutout innings. Tommy Lawrence was credited with the loss in relief to fall to 2-1 on the season.

McIntosh finished the day going 2-for-5 at the plate with two runs batted in to lead all Bulldogs. Second baseman continues his strong play at the plate, going 3-for-5 on the day.

Winthrop drew first blood in the game, plating a runner when shortstop Adam Gliebe grounded into a double play with the bases loaded in the first inning. Neither team would score over the next five innings, as the two pitchers shut down the opposing offenses.

In the top of the seventh the Bulldogs tied the game at one run apiece, when McIntosh grounded out to score Cody Buch from third. The Blue & White threatened again in the frame with a runner on third base, but was unable to drive in the go-ahead run.

McIntosh came to the plate in the top of the ninth with two runners on and two out and delivered a single to right-center, scoring Buch from second base. Centerfielder Cam Walters made a tremendous throw from the outfield to try to get Buch out at home, but the Bulldogs' third baseman slid around the tag of catcher Eddie Rohan to give Asheville the lead, 2-1.

Winthrop tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth, putting runners at first and second on two consecutive singles with one out. It was then that rightfielder T.J. Olesczuk hit into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game, and give Tabar the victory.

The Bulldogs will host region rival Western Carolina on Tuesday evening in their next contest, with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. The game will be played at McCormick Field, marking the first time this season that Asheville has played at the historic venue.
