Montgomery & Riles Lead Bulldogs Past Radford, 70-60
02.05.2011 | Women's Basketball
RADFORD, Va. -- UNC Asheville forwards Lindsey Montgomery and Kelli Riles each recorded double-doubles with Montgomery scoring a game-high 22 points and Riles pulling down a career-high and NCAA Division I school record 22 rebounds against Big South Conference foe Radford on Saturday afternoon as the Bulldogs earned a 70-60 victory over the homestanding Highlanders.
“We did a good job of executing assistant coach Tiffany Gwynn's game plan and controlling Radford's points in the paint,” said Asheville head coach Betsy Blose. “We came in wanting to limit their second chance points and we were able to hold them to only 11 offensive rebounds. The girls just did a great job of executing our game plan.”
Asheville (10-11, 3-6 BSC) got 22 points from Montgomery and 18 from Riles. Senior guard Kendall Shepard scored 14 for the Bulldogs while racking up six assists. Montgomery pulled down 10 boards for the Blue & White, who recorded 58 rebounds as a team.
The win for the Bulldogs avenges an 81-69 loss to the Highlanders earlier this season at the Justice Center.
The Highlanders (10-12, 7-2 BSC) scored only 24 points in the paint and seven second chance points. In the first meeting between the two schools Radford had 44 points in the paint. RU was led on offense by Ashley Buckhannon who posted 11 points in defeat.
The 22 rebounds by Riles breaks the UNC Asheville Division I school record set last season by Montgomery, pulled down 20 rebounds against Southern Wesleyan on Dec. 11.
Both teams started sluggishly in the first half with the two teams combining for only 11 points over the first eight minutes of the game. Asheville then started to work the ball down into Riles who scored eight in the opening frame. Riles was also a force on the boards, posting 11 rebounds in 16 minutes of play.
The Bulldogs took a 29-20 lead into the break with Riles scoring eight to lead Asheville and Buckhannon leading the Highlanders with six points.
The second half saw the Blue & White push its lead out to as much as 15 over the first five minutes of the frame. However, the Highlanders would keep chipping away at the Bulldogs' lead until they were able to tie the game at 56-56 with 2:22 remaining.
Two buckets by Montgomery would put the Bulldogs up 60-56 with 1:24 remaining, forcing Radford to foul to conserve time. Asheville would convert 10-12 free throws down the stretch to ice the game and secure the victory for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Tuesday evening when they hit the road one more time to take on non-conference foe Longwood in a game set to begin at 7 p.m. on the campus of the Lancers. Longwood earned a 76-66 victory over Asheville earlier this season at the Justice Center as the Bulldogs will look to return the favor on the Lancers home court.
