Longwood Sweeps Season Series With Asheville
02.08.2011 | Women's Basketball
FARMVILLE, Va. – In a back and forth game that 16 lead changes and nine tie scores the UNC Asheville women's basketball team dropped a 77-73 decision to Longwood University on Tuesday evening at Willett Hall on the campus of the Lancers.
“We had our chances in the game but in the end we just couldn't convert some opportunities down the stretch,” said Asheville head coach Betsy Blose. “We took a late lead but just couldn't hold onto it. You've got to give Longwood credit, they made the shots when it mattered.”
The Bulldogs were paced on offense by senior forward Lindsey Montgomery, who scored 24 points on the night. She also pulled down 11 rebounds en route to her seventh double-double of the season. Sophomore guard Grace Blaylock tied her own school record for 3-pointers in a game finishing with 18 points on six made treys.
Kendall Shepard scored 15 for the Blue & White, who fall to 10-12 on the season. This contest was also a rematch from a game earlier this season, a game in which the Lancers won 76-66 at the Justice Center. Asheville is now 1-3 lifetime against Longwood.
Longwood was led on offense by Brittanni Billups who posted 15 points and 14 boards for the Lancers. Crystal Smith contributed 14 to the Lancers' total with teammate Chelsea Coward adding 11. Krystel Garrison and Mina Jovanovic each scored 10 to help Longwood improve to 6-16 on the year.
In the first half the Bulldogs fell behind early but were able to make up ground and went into the break tied at 32 with the Lancers. Asheville struggled in the front court defending a bigger Longwood lineup after reigning Big South Conference Player of the Week Kelli Riles had to leave the game with a broken nose three minutes into the contest.
Longwood started the second half on a 12-2 run before Asheville was able to once again chip away at the lead. The Bulldogs retook the lead at the 8:11 mark when Montgomery hit a pair of free throws to give Asheville a 57-56 advantage.
From that point on the two teams traded the lead back and forth until Asheville was able to pull ahead 71-70 on a reverse layup by Shepard with 2:15 remaining. However, Asheville's lead would be short-lived as Smith hit a jumper 20 seconds later.
The Bulldogs turned the ball over on their next possession and were forced to foul to try and conserve time. The Lancers were able to convert enough free throws down the stretch to put the game out of reach.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when they return home to host Big South Conference foe Presbyterian in a game set to begin at 2 p.m. Asheville will look to avenge a 53-51 defeat at the hands of the Blue Hose on Jan. 31. It will also be a PinkZone game presented by National Girls and Women in Sports and fans are encouraged to show their support by wearing pink to the contest.
