Baseball Drops Season Opener to Virginia Tech, 21-4

Panthers Slip Past Bulldogs, 8-7, in 11 Innings

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Billy Alvino's run-scoring double in the top of the 11th inning scored the go-ahead run as High Point slipped past UNC Asheville 8-7 in the suspended game from Sunday.

High Point's (7-13, 3-7 Big South) Bill Manion had a one out single in the top of the 11th. Kyle Mahoney followed with a hit to place runners at first and second. After a line out, Alvino drove a ball down the left field line with what proved to be the game winner plating Manion.

UNC Asheville (4-21, 2-7 Big South) had a chance in the bottom of the frame. Mike Vaughn led off with a double to right center field bu was thrown out at third base trying to stretch it into a triple. Jamie Serber retured the final two batters for his first career save. Jeremy Berg picked up the win to improve to 2-1.  

UNC Asheville broke out to a 3-0 lead scoring twice in the second inning and adding a run in the third. Derrick Hopkins led off the second with a base hit. One out later, Jordan Lurie singled moving Hopkins to third base. Hopkins scored on a passed ball. Lurie came around to score on a RBI single by Kevin Weidenbacher. Beau Zinman led off the bottom of the third with a double and scored on a wild pitch.

High Point took the lead with five runs in the top of the fourth taking advantage of two Bulldog fielding errors. Max Fulginitti who is 2-for-4 in the game had a RBI single and Spencer Andrews had a two RBI single to put the Panthers on top. Billy Alvino singled home Kyle Mahoney in the sixth to give High Point a 6-3 lead.

The Panthers led until the bottom of the eight when HPU brought in closer Jeremy Berg. He walked the first two men he faced before Weidenbacher beat out a bunt to load the bases with no one out. Weidenbacher is 3-for-6 in the game posting three hits in both games of the double header. Justin Schumer doubled home Reed Kreiser and Catlin Carter. Schumer who has now hit in 10 straight games drove in three runs. Weidenbacher scored on a passed ball to five the Bulldogs a 7-6 lead. Schumer was thrown out at the plate on a squeeze play.

High Point tied the score with a run in the ninth off Greir Harrington. Alfie Wheeler led off with a single, was sacrificed to second base. A walk and a hit batter loaded the bases. Fulginitti hit a sacrifice fly to score Wheeler to tie the game. Alvino flied out to end the inning.

Michael Bogaert started for Asheville allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits in eight innings of work. HPU's Mike Caldwell went seven innings allowing four runs on 13 hits. Ryan Dull took the loss to fall to 1-5.
