03.24.2009 | Baseball

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. ? Kevin Weidenbacher, Beau Zinman, and Jordan Lurie each had three hits as UNC Asheville had a season-high 19 hits but it was East Tennessee State that pulled out an 18-11 victory Tuesday night at Cardinal Park.

In stark contrast to the 3-2 game these two teams played a week ago in Asheville, both teams combined for 29 runs and 45 hits Tuesday night. ETSU (10-10) jumped out to a 12-1 lead after four innings and then with stood a late UNC Asheville (4-18) rally.

The Bulldogs scored nine runs over three innings from the fifth through the seventh to get as close as 15-10. ETSU put the game out of reach with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Asheville drew one closer with a run in the ninth on a RBI single by Justin Schumer who had four RBI in the game.

Weidenbacher went 3-for-4 on Tuesday giving him three straight multi-hit games. He is now 9-for-17 over the last five games.  Schumer's base hit in the ninth moved his hitting streak to seven tying him for longest of the season. Lurie went 3-for-5 for the first multi-hit game of his career. He also scored three runs. Zinman went 3-for-6 marking the second time this season he has had three hits in a game.

Catlin Carter, Reed Kreiser, Danny Baatz, and Mike Vaughn each had two hits as every Bulldog player had at least one hit in the game.

Every ETSU starter had at least two hits in the game led by Bo Reeder, Paul Hoilman, and Ben Allen who each went 4-for-6. The three, four, and five hitters in the Bucs lineup were a combined 12-for-18 with six RBI and five runs scored. Troy Mendez went 3-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored. He hit the game's only home run, a three-run shot in the second inning.

Chas Byrne picked up the victory to improve to 2-1. He went five innings allowing three runs (two earned) on 10 hits. Schumer took the loss of Asheville falling to 0-4. He allowed nine runs (eight earned) on 11 hits in three innings of work.

The Bulldogs are now 0-7 in mid week game this season. Asheville will attempt to break that streak at Tennessee on Wednesday night in a 7 p.m. game.
