Big Inning Lifts Tennessee over UNC Asheville

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.? Jordan Lurie had a pair of hits and scored one runs but Tennessee used an eight-run sixth inning to hand UNC Asheville its second straight loss, 13-3, Wednesday night.
UNC Asheville (4-19) concluded a six game road trip using nine pitchers on the night. Ryan Dull (1-4) took the loss giving up a two-run home run to Cody Hawn in the bottom of the first inning. It was the only hit Dull allowed in two innings of work. He walked one and struck out four batters
Tennessee (11-12) blew the game open in the sixth inning. After a lead-off walk, Kentrail Davis tripled to score P.J. Polk. Hawn drove in his third run of the night with a RBI-single. Josh Lilles and Blake Forsythe had back-to-back hits to plate Hawn. Two walks sandwiched around a fielder's choice plated the fourth run of the inning. Zach Osborne had a RBI single. Two more walks and two wild pitches plated the final two runs in the innings. The Vols got eight runs on just five hits as there were six walks in the inning.
Adam Atkins picked up his first victory of the season for the Volunteers. He threw five shutout innings allowing just two hits. He walked one batter and struck out five.
Asheville scored all three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Reed Kreiser had a lead-off single. One out later, Mike Vaughn and Jordan Lurie had back-to back singles to load the bases. Austin Graham drew a walk to force Kreiser home with the Bulldogs' first run. A wild pitch plated Vaughn and Catlin Carter delivered a sacrifice fly to score Lurie. The Vols added three more runs in the eighth inning.
Six different Bulldogs had hits in the game including Justin Schumer who doubled in the first inning to move his hitting streak to a season-long eight games. Asheville falls to 0-8 in mid week games this season.
The Bulldogs return home this weekend to face High Point in the three game series. Friday's first game will be played at McCormick Field at 7 p.m. before the series shifts to Greenwood Field on Saturday and Sunday.
