Weidenbacher Earning Preseason Accolades

High Point Wins 1st Game 9-4

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Max Fulginitti went 5-for-5 with two RBI as High Point defeated UNC Asheville 9-4 in the first game of a Big South Conference doubleheader at Greenwood Field Sunday afternoon

The Bulldogs (4-20, 2-7 Big South) trailed 8-1 after three innings as the Panthers scored three times in the first, once in the second and four times in the third to take control of the game.

Senior shortstop Kevin Weidenbacher went 3-for-5 from the plate for UNC Asheville. He hit his second homer of the year in the third inning. His solo shot made the score 8-2.

High Point (6-13, 2-6 Big South) added an insurance run in the top of the eighth. After two outs, three consecutive singles by Kyle Mahoney, Fulginitti, and Billy Alvino plated a run.

Asheville scored twice in the bottom of the frame. Weidenbacher had a one out single. Justin Schumer followed with a double to move his hit streak to nine-straight games. Beau Zinman had an infield hit to score Weidenbacher and Danny Baatz singled to score Schumer.

RJ Chilbnkow (1-1) went 7.2 innings to record his first victory of the season. He allowed four runs on nine hits. He walked one batter and struck out six Bulldogs. Zach Scott pitched the final inning and a third for the Panthers.

Taylor Wohlwend (2-6) allowed eight runs on 11 hits in three innings. Dan Weller followed and pitched a career-high five innings. He allowed just one run on five hits. Jeremy Hall threw one inning. Bulldogs pitchers walked seven batters while fanning two.
