Late Home Run Downs Bulldogs

GREENVILLE, S.C.?Marcus Rose hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning to lift Furman to a 5-3 victory over UNC Asheville Tuesday night.
Rose hit two home runs in the game but it was his second, a two-run shot with one out off UNC Asheville reliever Taylor Wohlwend (0-2) that put Furman (3-2) ahead for good. Nick Karow who went 1-for-2 and scored two runs drew a lead-off walk. After a strikeout, Rose connected on his second home run of the season.
Reed Kreiser got the Bulldogs (0-5) on the board in the top of the first with a two-run home run down the left field line. It was Kreiser's first home run of the season. Kevin Weidenbacher who singled up the middle scored in front of Kreiser.
Rose led off the Paladin first with a solo home run to left field to cut the lead in half. Furman tied the game in the second inning. Karow had a two-out single and then scored on a RBI double by Aaron Thompkins.
The game remained tied 2-2 until the bottom of the seventh. Brian Harrison led off the home half of the frame with a ground-rule double. He was sacrificed to third. Reese Wade hit a ground ball to third. Cody Bush threw home but it was not in time to keep Harrison from scoring.
Asheville answered in the top of the eighth. Catlin Carter led off with an infield single. Weidenbacher sacrificed him to second where he would score on a two-out single by Justin Schumer.
Grier Harrington pitched five innings for Asheville allowing two runs on six hits. He walked four and struck out three. Michael Bogaert pitched the sixth before Dillon Waters came on in the seventh and Wholwend pitched the eighth.
Ian Perry started the game for Furman. He went just one inning allowing two runs on three hits. The Paladin bullpen shutout the Bulldogs on just one hit over the next six innings. Marc DeDecker allowed one run on two hits in the eighth but was credited with the victory to move to 1-0 on the season. Karow pitched a perfect ninth inning to record his first save.
Asheville will open its home schedule on Friday as it begins a four-game series against Central Michigan. Friday's first pitch will be at 2 p.m. The game can be heard live on uncabulldogs.com.
