Weidenbacher Sets Big South Record; Dogs fall to Liberty

ASHEVILLE, N.C.? Kevin Weidenbacher went 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to a Big South record 29 straight games but Liberty came away with an 11-4 victory in the rubber game of their three-game series at Greenwood Field on Sunday.
Liberty (14-15, 3-3 Big South) scored three runs in the first inning for the second straight day. Kenneth Negron doubled to lead off the game and scored on a base hit by P.K. Keller who went 4-for-6 on the day. An error scored the second run and Cody Brown who went 3-for-5 had a RBI single in the inning.
The Flames added a run to take a 4-0 lead in the third inning. Keller led off with a single and scored on a single by Garrett Young.
Weidenbacher singled to lead off the bottom of the third inning. The hit broke the nine year Big South record of 28-straight games by Charleston Southern's Jason Corrigale in 1999. Elliott Arrington drew a walk and a fly ball moved Weidenbacher to third where he would score on RBI ground out by Beau Zinman.
Errol Hollinger hit a two-run home run for the Flames in the fourth. It was his fourth home run of the year to make the score 6-1. The Flames scored four times in the fifth to build the lead to 10-1.
Chris Freeman and Kevin Mattison each walked to lead off the Asheville (13-21, 1-5 Big South) seventh. Reed Kreiser delivered a RBI single to score Freeman to make the score 10-2.
Liberty scored without a hit in the top of the eighth. Asheville scored two unearned runs taking advantage of three LU errors in the bottom of the inning.
Steven Evans (1-2) picked up his first win of the season throwing six innings allowing one run on seven hits. Taylor Wohlwend took the loss falling to 0-4 on the season.
Chris Freeman had two hits for the Bulldogs in the game. Seven other players all had one hit for the Dogs.
The top six hitters in the Liberty lineup all had multi hit games. Negron, Hollinger, and Keller combined to go 9-for-17 with seven runs scored in the game.
Asheville will return to action on Wednesday as it hosts Wofford in a 7 p.m. game at McCormick Field.
