Baseball Edged at Furman, 8-7

GREENVILLE, S.C. ? Campbell Lewis delivered a lead off, walk-off home run in the bottom on the ninth inning to power Furman to an 8-7 comeback win over UNC Asheville in baseball action Tuesday night at Furman Stadium.

The Bulldogs (6-9) had led 7-0 in the second inning before the Paladins (8-4) rallied for the win.

Asheville was led at the plate by a trio of players with two hits. Kevin Mattison, Beau Zinman and Catlin Carter all had two hits for the visitors.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring with three runs in the first inning. Kevin Wiedenbacher opened the game with a double and came home on Mattison's RBI-double for 1-0 Asheville lead. Later in the inning, Mattison scored on a wild pitch for the second run of the inning. Eliott Arrington had the first of his three RBIs on the night with a groundout that scored Reed Kreiser for a 3-0 advantage.

Asheville pushed the lead to 7-0 with four runs in the second. Zinman led off with single and went to third on Brett Robinson's double. Carter singled in Zinman for a 4-0 Bulldog lead. Krieser drove in the second of the inning with a sacrifice fly. Later in the inning, Arrington had a two-run double for a 7-0 Asheville lead.

But Furman's pitching limited the Bulldogs to just three hits and no runs the rest of the game. The Paladins got back in the game with four runs in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 7-4.

Furman got single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to narrow the lead to 7-6. Asheville still led 7-6 in the bottom of the eighth but the Paladins scored an unearned run to knot the game at 7-7.

UNC Asheville starts a three-game series at McCormick Field with Marist Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. Saturday's game is at 2 p.m. with Sunday's finale starting at 1 p.m.
