ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? UNC Asheville men's basketball coach Eddie Biedenbach has announced the signing of five players to national-letters-of-intent in the early signing period. The five are 6-1 guard Matt Dickey, 6-6 forward Quinard Jackson, 6-2 guard John Primm, 6-3 guard Chris Stephenson and 6-6 forward Terrence Turner.

“This is best group of early signees that we have ever had at UNC Asheville,” commented Biedenbach. “We are going to graduate our starting backcourt this year in K.J. Garland and Bryan Smithson, and we addressed that with three of the guards we signed.

“We also graduate Vincent James and Garrett Moles in the frontcourt and believe we have made some strides to replace them with the two forwards we signed,” added Biedenbach. “We're very excited about this class and believe all of them will be key players for us in the future.”

Dickey plays at Hewitt-Trussville HS in Trussville, Ala.  He averaged 15 points and 6.8 assist per game on a team that went 26-7 last season. Dickey earned all-district honors as a junior.

“Matt Dickey has gained a lot of experience in the past few years with his high school and AAU teams,” explained Biedenbach. “He is a true combination guard who is a good handler with the ball and can score. Matt is the kind of guard we like to have in our program.”

Jackson plays at Benjamin HS in Palm Beach, Fla. He averaged 19 points and 10 rebounds per game a year ago. Jackson was listed by the Palm Beach Post as one of the area's Fab Five for the 2007-08 season.

“Quinard is an under-sized forward who really knows how to play game,” stated Biedenbach. “He is a smart player with great instincts. Quinard will really help our team basketball IQ next season.”

Primm is currently at Dickson County HS in Dickson, Tenn. Last year, Primm averaged 17.5 points and 4.2 assists per game. He earned all-district honors his sophomore and junior year and was team MVP last season. Primm was a second team preseason all-state selection this year.

“John Primm is a true leader on and off the court,” declared Biedenbach. “He was a quarterback for his football team in the fall and is now a quarterback for his basketball team. John is a great shooter, as well.”

Stephenson is at Charlotte HS in Punta Gorda, Fla. Last season, he averaged 15.3 points and 7.8 rebounds per game for Charlotte as the school went to the Class 5A-Region 3 championship game.

“Chris Stephenson is the most athletic and high profile player we've recruited in a long time,” said Biedenbach. “He is a versatile player who can play as a guard or forward. Chris has guard-shooting ability and great post moves like a forward. He also rebounds very well.”

Turner is at Fayette County HS in Fayetteville, Ga. He averaged six points and five rebounds per game last season on a team that went 23-6 and advanced to the first round of the state playoffs.

“Terrence is an athletic forward who will really help our transition game,” pointed out Biedenbach. “He's a tremendous athlete who is going to add to our full-court game when he's playing.”
