ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Bryan Smithson scored a career-high 26 points to lead UNC Asheville to its best start in 23 years as the Bulldogs downed a pesky Tusculum squad, 84-73 at Justice Center Tuesday night.

Asheville improved its record to 6-1. It's the first time the Bulldogs have been 6-1 since the 1983-84 season.

The home team had to withstand a tremendous performance from sophomore guard Kyle Moore who scored a career-high 32 points. He was 13-of-21 from the field and 6-of-10 from the three-point line.

Smithson had a sensational game, as well. He was 9-of-12 from the field, 3-of-6 from long distance and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. Senior guard K.J. Garland had 15 points and nine assists. Vincent James chipped in 13 points and six rebounds. John Williams gave Asheville a big lift off the bench with 12 points. Garrett Moles went 4-of-4 from the field for eight points and collected seven rebounds.

Tusculum had Lavoti Jeter with 13 points. Darren Hobbs pumped in 11 points.

“It wasn't pretty at times but we got the job done against a tough Tusculum team,” stated UNC Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach. “We started off slow but got some great energy from John Williams. Bryan had a great game shooting the ball. I like the way we hung tough when Tusculum made runs at us in the second half.”

The Bulldogs led 39-34 at halftime and steadily built the lead to 14 at 61-47 with 11 minutes left on a lay-up from Garland.

Tusculum steadily chipped away and closed to 65-62 on a two free throws from Jeter at the five-minute mark. The Bulldogs led 72-67 with 3:29 remaining before Asheville finally put the game away with a 9-2 run to lead 81-69.

The Pioneers (1-4) controlled much of the first half thanks to Moore. He scored 17 points in the opening half as the sophomore guard went 7-of-10 from the field and 3-of-6 from the three-point line. Tusculum jumped out to a 14-4 lead and led 34-33 late in the opening half before Smithson struck twice.

The senior guard sank a three-pointer with 40 seconds left to go to give the Bulldogs a 36-34 lead. After a Tusculum turnover with five seconds to go in the half, Garland was able to get the ball to Smithson who hit a long three-pointer to end the half and give Asheville a 39-34 halftime lead.

UNC Asheville shot better than 50 percent for the fifth time this season as the Bulldogs shot a season-high 56 percent (28-of-50) from the field. Asheville shot 50 percent (8-of-16) from long distance.

However, Tusculum out-rebounded 33-28 and had 11 offensive rebounds to just five for Asheville.

UNC Asheville plays next at ACC foe Virginia Tech at 7 p.m. The game was originally supposed to be played at 4 p.m. but has been moved to 7 p.m. because of the Hokies football team's involvement in the ACC championship game on Saturday.

NOTES ? Reid Augst hit two free throws and has now made 18 straight free throws...K.J. Garland had nine assists and is tied for third on the school's all-time career assist list with Maurice Caldwell at 370.
