BLACKSBURG, VA. ? Virginia Tech went on a 16-2 run late in the second half to ease past UNC Asheville 65-51 at Cassell Coliseum Saturday night.

The Bulldogs (6-2) were led by Reid Augst with 12 points. Bryan Smithson added 11 points.

Virginia Tech was led by Deron Washington and A.D. Vassallo with 17 points each.

“Our effort was outstanding and we battled very hard tonight, stated UNC Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach. “Virginia Tech is a very athletic team and played great defense the whole night.”

Asheville used a 9-2 run and got a three-point play from Vincent James to grab a 44-41 lead with 6:30 left.

But the Hokies (3-3) responded with 10 straight points to race to a 51-44 lead. Two straight baskets from Washington gave Va. Tech the lead for good and the back-to-back treys from Vassalo pushed the lead to 51-44.

A basket from Lewis Witcher increased the lead to 53-44. John Williams finally ended the Hokie run with a tap-in bucket to make it 53-46. Va. Tech scored the next six points to seal the victory.

The Bulldogs shot a season-low 32 percent from the field (17-of-53) and shot just 24 percent (8-of-34) in the second half.

“We took some bad shots on offense that really hurt us at times,” explained Biedenbach.

Virginia Tech controlled the rebounds as it out-rebounded Asheville, 42-28.

“The rebounding really came back to hurt us, as well,” added Biedenbach. “Virginia Tech was able to get a lot of second and third shots.”

The Bulldogs played their second straight game without the services of 7-7 center Kenny George. George missed the game with a foot injury.

Virginia Tech used a late surge at the end of the first half to take a 32-23 halftime lead. The Hokies led 16-15 at eight-minute mark but got eight points from Wilcher to build a nine-point halftime lead.

Asheville quickly came back early in the second half getting a three-point play from Augst and a trey from Smithson to close to 36-34.

UNC Asheville won't play again until Thursday, Dec. 13 when the Bulldogs host Campbell at Justice Center.

NOTES ? K.J. Garland had four assists and moved into third place on the school's all-time career assist lead as he now has 374...Reid Augst was 3-of-3 from the free throw line and has now made 21 consecutive free throws...John Williams grabbed a career-best six rebounds.
