12.13.2007 | Men's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? John Williams' free throw and blocked shot helped UNC Asheville hold off Campbell, 79-76 in non-conference college basketball action Thursday night at Justice Center.

The red-shirt freshman hit a free throw with 34 seconds left to give the Bulldogs a 77-76 lead. He missed the second free throw and Campbell came down with the rebound. The Camels had a chance to take the lead but Williams blocked Reggie Bishop's lay-up attempt with 12 seconds left. Reid Augst of UNC Asheville came down with the rebound.

Augst, who set a new school record for most consecutive free throws earlier in the game with 27, knocked down both charity tosses to give the Bulldogs a 79-76 lead.

The Camels (2-7) had two chances to tie but Jake Wohlfeil's first three-point attempt fell short. Julius Perkins picked up the rebound and misfired on another trey attempt as the buzzer sounded.

The Bulldogs (7-2) were led by Bryan Smithson with 21 points and four assists. Augst added 19 points and was 7-of-8 from the free throw line. He entered the game shooting 96 percent from the free throw line and was second in the nation. His miss from the line midway through the second half is just his second of the year. He is now 31-of-33 from the line for 94 percent. K.J. Garland finished with 15 points and eight assists. 7-7 center Kenny George had eight points, five blocked shots and tied his career-high in rebounds with 12.

Campbell was led by the brilliance of sophomore forward Jonathan Rodriguez. Rodriguez scored a career-high 34 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. It was his sixth double-double in the last eight games. The Miami native went 14-of-19 from the field, 2-of-3 from beyond the arc and 4-of-7 from the free throw line. Wohlfeil finished with 15 points and was 5-of-9 from the three-point line.

“We found a way to win and that was nice but give Campbell all the credit in the world for making this very tough on us,” commented UNC Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach. “We led most of the way but simply could never put them away. Jonathan Rodriguez is a tremendous player. He gave us fits the whole way.

“However, we played with some poise down the stretch and made some big shots when we absolutely had to have them,” added Biedenbach. “John Williams did a good job getting fouled and getting to the free throw line. He then made a great defensive play at the end to save the game.”

The Bulldogs led 60-50 with 10 minutes left after Garrett Moles scored on a lay-up but Campbell roared back with a 19-8 run to grab the lead 69-68 with 4:18 left on two free throws from Kyle Vejraska. Wohlfeil speared the run with three consecutive treys.

The lead would changes hand four more times before Smithson scored on a three-point play at the 1:18 mark to give the Bulldogs a 76-74 lead.

Rodriguez scored on the Camels ensuing possession to tie the game at 76-76 with 56 seconds left. He scored 22 points in the second half and was 9-of-11 from the field.

The first half had the Bulldogs hitting their first eight shots of the game but the home team could not shake the visitors. Tied at 20-20 midway through the first half, Asheville went on a 14-3 run keyed by two treys from Smithson as the Bulldogs build a 34-23 lead.

UNC Asheville settled for a 40-33 halftime lead,

The Bulldogs play again on Monday night at home against South Carolina State starting at 7 p.m.
