ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? UNC Asheville placed four players in double figures and held Brevard to a school-record low of 35 points as the Bulldogs rolled to a 75-35 win over the Tornados at Justice Center Tuesday night.
UNC Asheville (3-0) is off to its best start since the 1989-90 season when the Bulldogs also started off 3-0.
Brevard was led by Jonathan Whitson with nine points and seven rebounds.
“Our defense was very good tonight,” commented UNC Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach. “We were very concerned about Brevard because they played us so tough last year and have a good team coming back. We were able to get an early lead and our defense was consistent for 40 minutes.
“I also liked that we had a real team effort,” added Biedenbach. “Everyone who played made a big contribution both on offense and defense. We shot the ball pretty well and overall it was a good effort against a well-coached Brevard team.”
The Bulldogs controlled the game from the start as their defense limited the Tornados to just seven field goals in the opening half. Brevard was 7-of-19 from the field for 24 percent. Four of the seven field goals were treys to keep the visitors within striking distance. Joseph Chilton knocked down a 25-footer as the first half buzzer sounded to keep Brevard within 34-19 at intermission.
