Men's Basketball Stays Unbeaten By George; Bulldogs Down Campbell 83-71

11.17.2007 | Men's Basketball

BUIES CREEK, N.C. ? Kenny George became the first UNC Asheville player in school history to record a triple double as the Bulldogs rallied past Campbell, 83-71 Saturday afternoon at Carter Gym.

George tallied a career-high 20 points. He grabbed 12 rebounds and tied his single-game school record for blocked shots with 10. The 7-7 center was a perfect 8-of-8 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free throw line. The Chicago native had seven blocked shots in the first half.

UNC Asheville improved to 4-0 on the season and is 4-0 for the first time since the 1981-82 season.

Senior guard K.J. Garland had a sensational game for the Bulldog with 23 points, six rebounds and seven assists. He moved into fifth place on the school's all-time assist list with 346.

Freshman John Williams had another solid game off the bench with 11 points. Vincent James added 11 points and was perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line.

Asheville blocked 16 shots on the day to set another school and Big South record for most blocks in a game. The previous high was 15 set last Sunday against Lees-McRae.

The Bulldogs trailed by 12 in the first half and 41-34 at halftime before out-scoring the Camels (1-2) 49-30 in the second half.

“This is a great win for our team to get a win on the road in a very tough place to play,” stated UNC Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach. “We trailed by 12 in the first half and didn't have Bryan Smithson (UNC Asheville's leading scorer) but found a way to come back and win the ballgame. We did a nice job grinding things out on both the offensive and defense end in the second half.”

Biedenbach had praise for Kenny George.

“We played Kenny a little more than we would have liked to today but he really responded with a great game,” added Biedenbach. “He makes things for opponents when he's playing like he did today.”

The veteran coach also had praise for K.J. Garland.

“This was one of the best games that K.J. Garland has ever played for us,” said Biedenbach. “He did a wonderful job running our offense and hit some big shots when we had to have them.

Kyle Vejraska led Campbell (1-2) with 15 points, while Jonathan Rodriguez chipped in 13, plus 13 rebounds.  Julius Perkins and Jake Wohlfeil had nine each for the Camels, who made 12-of-34 (.353) three-point field goals, but hit only 13-of-41 from two-point distance (.317).

Campbell used a 12-3 run to build a 31-19 edge with 8:44 left in the first half, but the Bulldogs closed to within seven (41-34) at the break.

Asheville then out-scored the Camels 34-13 in the first 13:53 of the second half and led 68-54 on Vincent James' old-fashioned 3-point play with 6:07 to go.  UNCA still led 74-60 with 3:17 remaining before Rodriguez and Wohlfeil hit threes and Vejraska canned a jumper to pull CU within 74-68 with 1:59 to go.

However, Garland nailed a trey on the ensuing possession and the Camels did not score until Wohlfeil's three hit the net at the final horn.

Campbell held a 23-16 edge on the boards at half-time, but the Bulldogs out-rebounded the Camels by a 31-16 margin in the final 20 minutes.

UNC Asheville travels to mountain rival Western Carolina Tuesday night for a game against the Catamounts at 7 p.m.

Western Carolina is a very good team, and we're going to have play even better than we did today to have a chance at winning,” commented Biedenbach.
