02.13.2026 | Baseball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Interim Head Coach Alex Raburn earned his first win as Bulldog skipper at Greenwood Field on Friday (Feb. 13), as UNC Asheville Baseball split its Opening Day twinbill with St. Bonaventure.
Â
Game One
Â
The Bulldogs opened the scoring with three two-out runs in the home half of the first. After a two-out error in the St. Bonaventure infield extended the inning, Patrick Gillen took advantage with a single to left that pushed Jake Minarik to second. Blaize Johnson then reached on a wild pitch on a third strike that bounced to the backstop, allowing Minarik to score from second and Gillen to get to third on the play. Ben Green then laced his first collegiate hit down the right field line for a two-RBI double to push the Bulldog lead to 3-0. The teams traded scoreless frames until Asheville would plate four in the bottom of the fifth to pull away in the game. Logan Lowe would draw a one-out walk, before Jack Torbett would bunt him to second for Minarik. Minarik would bring Lowe home with a RBI single to left to force a Bonnies pitching change, before Gillen drew a walk pushing Minarik to second. The catcher's throw would sail into center, allowing Minarik to get to third on the play. None of that would matter as Johnson would deliver the big blow in the inning, a three-run tank down the right field line for his first of the season and seventh home run of his Bulldog career. Asheville would add its final run of the game in the eighth, when Gillen would score on a wild pitch after reaching on an error earlier in the inning. The shutout solidified the second year in a row that the Bulldogs have pitched a shutout on Opening Day, but the first opening game shutout for the team since the 2008 season.
Â
Minarik, Gillen, Johnson, Green, Coleman McGinnis and Jake Pereira each posted hits in the game for the Bulldogs. Gillen scored three times in the game, while Minarik and Johnson each scored twice and Lowe also scored once. Johnson drove in three runs in the game, while Green picked up his first two college RBI and Minarik also drove in one run. Green also collected his first collegiate stolen base in the game. Lucas Boesen got the start in his Bulldog debut on the hill, allowing three hits through four scoreless innings to go along with four walks and four strikeouts. Drew Turner (1-0) earned his first win as a Bulldog with five solid innings of relief, allowing just one hit with three punchouts. McGinnis also busted two runners on the basepaths in the game, with one picked off and one caught stealing.
Â
Game Two
Â
St. Bonaventure struck first in the second game, scoring two runs in the top of the first before the Bulldogs would respond with two of their own in the home half to tie the game. Jack Torbett started things off with his first hit as a Bulldog, before Minarik drew a walk to push him to second. After a groundout moved both runners up, Johnson brought them both home with a two-out single to center. Asheville would add one run in the second when Minarik drew a bases-loaded walk to score Chase Klingemann, before adding another run in the third to go ahead 4-2. Klingemann reached on a two-out error in the inning, before scoring on a McGinnis double to deep center. St. Bonaventure would respond with five runs in the top of the third to go ahead 7-4, before Asheville would answer with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to knot things up yet again. Johnson started the frame off with a walk, before Green singled to right to move him to second. McGinnis would blast another double to center to score Johnson and push Green to third with just one out, before Periera brought home Green on a groundout that moved McGinnis to third. Lowe would rip a single through the left side to score McGinnis to leave the game tied 7-7 headed to the sixth. St. Bonaventure would secure the win with three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Â
McGinnis posted a pair of doubles in the game to lead Asheville with two hits, while Lowe, Torbett, Gillen, Johnson, Green and Pereira each had one hit in the game. Klingemann scored twice in the game, while Torbett, Minarik, Johnson, Green and McGinnis each scored once. Johnson and McGinnis each drove in two runs in the game, while Lowe, Minarik and Pereira each had one RBI in the game. Lowe also stole his first base of the season in the game. Cooper Smith made his Bulldog debut on the bump before giving way to Landon Gross for his Bulldog debut. Gross fired 0.2 innings of scoreless relief with two walks, before handing things over to Ryland Howell. Howell (0-1) took the loss in the contest allowing four runs, three earned on four hits in 2.1 innings to go along with two walks and five strikeouts. Â
