Early Strike Leads Asheville Past South Carolina State
09.04.2025 | Women's Soccer
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Soccer saw a strike in the first minute from reigning Big South Conference Freshman of the Week Lilly Graumann lead the Bulldogs past visiting South Carolina State 1-0 at Greenwood Field on Thursday (Sept. 4). This marks the first time since August 2023 that the Bulldogs have recorded three consecutive shutouts.
The Bulldogs scored the first goal in the opening minute when a connecting play down the far wing saw Campbell Stoll find Karlee Benz. Benz would play it into the box finding Graumann, who scored her third of the season along with her third consecutive game-winner. It marked the quickest goal scored by a Bulldog this season.
South Carolina State would eventually find some offensive structure in the second half, despite Asheville winning the shot battle 5-4 in the half and earning five corner kicks to South Carolina State's one. South Carolina State's best chance on goal came in the 83rd minute, when Little had to make a big save on a long-distance try from Brooke Gloster.
Asheville would go on to collect its third straight clean sheet for the second time in the last three seasons.
Asheville held a 16-6 edge in shots in the match, including a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. Asheville also earned a total of seven corner kicks in the match holding South Carolina State to just one. Georgia Duke paced the offense with a career-high five shots in the match for Asheville, while Graumann, Benz, Abby Foulk, Nao Kawasaki and Olivia Simpson each recorded two shots in the match. Lizzie Ball also added one shot in the match for Asheville. Little (2-0-0) made four saves in the match for her second shutout of the season and the second of her Bulldog career.
The Bulldogs (4-1-1) return to action on Sunday (Sept. 7) at East Tennessee State in non-conference action. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. from Johnson City, Tenn. with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
