Women's Soccer Battles to 1-1 Draw at Jacksonville State on Sunday

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - UNC Asheville Women's Soccer battled to a 1-1 draw at Jacksonville State on Sunday (Aug. 24).
The Bulldogs were able to strike early for a 1-0 lead, when a Jax State turnover in the midfield led to a nice passing sequence through the middle for Asheville. A Gamecock defender was able to break up the play, before turning it over to Karlee Benz. Benz the ripped a shot into the lower left corner for her first goal of the season, the third of her Bulldog career for a 1-0 lead.
After the goal, both teams would find their rhythm in possession before Asheville would hold its lead at the half. Asheville dominated the first half outshooting Jax State 6-1 in the frame and earning two corner kicks to the Gamecocks' none.
The teams traded runs in each others' offensive ends, before Jax State was able to sustain some pressure in UNC Asheville's end that led to a pair of corner kicks for the Gamecocks. In the 75th minute, Kaia Samuelsen Elverum bent a corner kick to off the far post and in for an Olympico goal to tie the match. Both teams would continue to trade runs in the final stages of the match before the final whistle.
Both teams finished the match with seven total shots and three on goal, while Jax State earned five corner kicks in the contest to UNC Asheville's three. Georgia Duke registered a career-high two shots in the match for Asheville, while Lilly Graumann, Manuela Schreier, Lili Adams, Benz and Olivia Simpson each had one shot in the match with Simpson recording the first attempt of her career. Gracie Murray (1-1-1) made two saves between the pipes in the contest.
The Bulldogs (1-1-1) return home on Wednesday (Aug. 27) to host Mars Hill for the team's Greenwood Beach Party. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. from Greenwood Field, with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
