Cihlar's Second Half Strike Powers Bulldogs Past Davidson Thursday Night

DAVIDSON, N.C. - A second half strike from Makayla Cihlar powered UNC Asheville Women's Soccer past Davidson 1-0 Thursday night (Sept. 10) on the road.
 
The teams traded runs, pressures and possessions throughout the first half, with Davidson outshooting Asheville 8-2 in the opening frame yet the match would head to the half scoreless. Asheville registered one corner kick to Davidson's two in the first half, while London Phoenix made three saves in the opening frame.
 
Asheville applied pressure early in the second half, ultimately being rewarded with the game-winner in the 59th minute. An Asheville transition moved forward finding Kandis Calvin at the edge of the box, who found an open Cihlar on the wing. Cihlar took a touch then blasted her second of the season to the top right corner that would stand as the second of her career. It was also her second game-winner of the season and second game-winner of her career. Calvin picked up her first assist as a Bulldog and the third assist of her collegiate career on the play. Asheville was able to fend off any Davidson chances for the remainder of the match, ultimately limiting Davidson to five shots in the half with Phoenix only having to make one save in the period.
 
Asheville totaled nine shots in the match, with four on target and also one corner kick. Alexandra Gib registered a new career-high with three shots in the match, while Lili Adams had two shots and Kathleen Doane, Calvin, Cihlar and Alexa Francis each tallied one shot in the match. Phoenix made four saves between the pipes for her second clean sheet of the season and the second shutout of her career.
 
The Bulldogs return to action on Sunday (Sept. 13) to host VMI for Senior Day. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m. from Greenwood Field with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com. The Senior Day ceremonies will start at 3:45 p.m.
