Bulldogs Hang On for 4-3 Victory over Winthrop in Series Finale

ROCK HILL, S.C. - UNC Asheville Baseball hung on for a 4-3 victory over Winthrop in the series finale on Sunday (Apr. 6).
 
Winthrop took a 1-0 lead in the third, before Asheville tied the game in the top of the fourth on Blaize Johnson's fourth homer of the season. Asheville would take a 3-1 lead in the fifth, with the inning starting with a walk by Jake Minarik who later advanced to third on a single to left by Canon Pierce. Minarik would score on a groundout by Coleman McGinnis, before Jake Pereira started the train right back up with a two-out triple to right center. Corbin Lanowitz would bring him home with a single to left to plate Asheville's second run in the inning. Winthrop would get one run back in the home half to make it a 3-2 game, before Asheville would add an insurance run in the seventh when Lanowitz singled home Pierce. Winthrop would get one run back in the home half of the eighth, before Ryland Howell would slam the door on the game leaving two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth.
 
Asheville out-hit Winthrop for the second straight game, totaling nine hits in the game paced by two hits each from Lanowitz, Pierce and Pereira. Rylen Stockton, Johnson and Brock Mercado each had one hit in the game for Asheville. Lanowitz drove two runs in for the Bulldogs, while Johnson and McGinnis each added one RBI in the game. Johnson, Minarik, Pierce and Pereira each scored one run in the victory. Lanowitz also swiped one bag in the game. Garrett Crum (2-0) picked up the win in his first career start, firing a career-high seven innings scattering five hits surrendering just two runs with three walks and five strikeouts. He was relieved by Cal Barna who allowed one run with two walks, before Howell picked up his first career save in the win. Howell fired two scoreless innings with two walks and two strikeouts picking up the save and stranding a pair of runners in the home half of the ninth.
 
The Bulldogs return home on Tuesday (Apr. 8) to host Queens (N.C.) in non-conference action wrapping up the season series. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m. from Greenwood Field, with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
