ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Baseball rode Clay Edmondson's career start in the first game to a doubleheader split with Presbyterian on Saturday (Mar. 29) at Greenwood Field. The Bulldogs won game one 5-4, before Presbyterian would win the rubber match 12-7 to capture the weekend series.
Â
Game One
Â
UNC Asheville built a 4-0 lead over the first three innings with two runs in the first and two runs in the third. Corbin Lanowitz opened the frame with a single to left, before Logan Lowe drew a walk and Rylen Stockton reached on a bunt single to load the bases with nobody out. Patrick Gillen would bring home Lanowitz with a sacrifice fly, before Blaize Johnson would move a runner up 90 feet on a fielder's choice. Owen Michelson would score Lowe with a single up the middle in the inning. Lowe would start the third inning with a one-out double to right center, before Rylen Stockton would blast his second home run of the season over the left field wall to stretch Asheville's lead to four. After Presbyterian scored their first run in the top of the fourth, the teams would trade blank frames until Asheville would add a run in the bottom of the seventh when Gillen singled up the middle to score Jake Pereira. Edmondson would ride his career start into the ninth, before Presbyterian would score three runs off of him before his exit. Daylinh Nguyen-Brown would slam the door on the Blue Hose rally for his fifth save of the season.
Â
Michelson went a career-best 3-3 in the game, while Stockton added two hits and Lanowitz, Lowe, Gillen, Johnson and Pereira each had one. Lowe scored twice in the game, while Lanowitz, Stockton and Pereira each crossed the plate once. Stockton and Gillen each drove in two runs in the game, while Michelson also added one. Michelson also stole a career-high two bases in the game. Nguyen-Brown allowed one hit in the inning, now tying for ninth on the all-time single-season saves list with his fifth of the season.
Â
Game Two
Â
Presbyterian built a 4-0 lead through two and a half innings, before the Bulldogs responded with three in the home half of the third. Jake Minarik led off the frame with his third home run of the season blasting a solo shot down the left field line, before Lanowitz would jumpstart the train with a two-out single to right. He would come around to score on Logan Lowe's first career triple, a ball that found plenty of green grass in the right center gap. Stockton was intentionally walked in the following at-bat, before he moved to second and Lowe scored on a wild pitch. After Presbyterian got two back in the top of the fourth, Asheville would counter with one in the home half when Pereira singled up the middle to score Michelson. Presbyterian would tack on four more runs in the top of the sixth and one in the eighth, before Asheville would score three in the home half. Stockton would greet a new Presbyterian pitcher with a single through the left side, before Chase Klingemann would lace a double to right center to move Stockton to third. Stockton would score on a Johnson groundout, before Michelson would draw a walk and Minarik would reach on an infield single to score Klingemann. Pereira would later lace a two-out single through the right side to score Michelson as Asheville's final run of the game.
