Baseball Drops Series Opener at Winthrop on Friday

Asheville struck first in the top of the fourth when Brock Mercado scored Rylen Stockton on a groundout, before Winthrop would pull away with five runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth. Winthrop would add another run in the eighth, before Asheville would score twice in the ninth to bring the game to its final score. Isaac Turner led off the inning with a pinch-hit walk, before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Turner moved up to third on a fly ball from Caiden Chilausky, before scoring on a groundout from Chase Klingemann. Jake Minarik would launch his fourth home run of the season for Asheville's final run of the game.

Blaize Johnson paced the offense with two hits in the game, while Mercado and Minarik each had one hit. Stockton, Turner and Minarik each scored a run in the game for Asheville while Mercado, Klingemann and Minarik each drove in one run. Tony Lopez (0-2) took the loss on the bump for Asheville, allowing five runs on three hits through three innings with three walks and one strikeout. He was relieved by Nic Melton for one inning, before Shea Walker would contribute three scoreless innings out of the pen allowing just one hit with three strikeouts. Chase Buscher and Zachary Gaydos would finish off Asheville's time on the bump in the game.
