Lead Slips Away as Baseball Drops Middle Game at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. - A seventh-inning lead slipped away for UNC Asheville Baseball as the Bulldogs dropped the middle game of their Big South Conference series at Winthrop on Saturday (Apr. 5) by a score of 11-9.

Asheville built an 8-3 lead through the first five innings, with one run coming in each of the first three innings along with a four-run fourth inning and adding another in the fifth. Blaize Johnson would start the scoring in the first with a two-out double down the left field line to score Rylen Stockton, before Winthrop countered with two runs in the bottom of the first for a 2-1 lead. Jake Minarik would tie the game with his second home run of the weekend and his sixth of the season in the second, launching a solo shot to left. After Clay Edmondson kept Winthrop off the board in the third, Asheville took a 3-2 lead when Johnson ripped his second double of the game to left to score Logan Lowe. After another scoreless frame from Edmondson, Asheville would plate four runs in the fourth to take their lead to 8-2. Canon Pierce began the frame with a double down the right field line, before Isaac Turner would draw a one-out walk to put two runners on. After a Winthrop pitching change, Corbin Lanowitz was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Lowe. Lowe would draw a walk to score Pierce, before Turner would score and runners behind him would move up on a wild pitch. Stockton would single to right to score Lanowitz in the inning, before Johnson would score Lowe on a sacrifice fly to right to cap off Asheville's inning.

Winthrop would get one run back in the home half of the fourth, before Asheville would add another run in the top of the fifth when Minarik scored Brock Mercado on a groundout in the infield. After the team's traded blank frames in the sixth, Minarik would score Coleman McGinnis on a double to right center to push Asheville's lead to 9-3. Winthrop would rally in the home half of the seventh, responding with eight runs to ultimately bring the game to its final score.

Asheville out-hit Winthrop 10-9 in the game, paced by a career-high three hits and a career-high three runs batted in from Johnson. Stockton and Minarik each had two hits, while Lanowitz, Lowe and Pierce each had one hit in the game. Minarik also had a career-high three RBI in the game, while Lowe and Stockton each drove in one run in the game. Lowe scored two runs in the game, while Lanowitz, Stockton, Mercado, McGinnis, Pierce, Minarik and Turner each scored once in the game. Lowe also stole his 10th base of the season in the game. Edmondson left the game with a no-decision after five innings in his start, where he allowed three runs while scattering four hits with a season-high six walks to go along with five strikeouts. Daylinh Nguyen-Brown followed Edmondson for one inning of relief allowing five runs, four earned on three hits with two walks. Nick Bruno (0-2) was hung with the loss on the bump, allowing three unearned runs allowing one hit to go along with two walks. Matthew Hall was able to limit the damage in his relief appearance, scattering one hit over two innings with one walk and two strikeouts.
