Double-Figure Performances Power Bulldogs Past South Carolina State in Overtime

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -Â Double-figure scoring and rebounding powered UNC Asheville Women's Basketball past South Carolina State 64-58 in overtime in the annual Education Day game sponsored by Tanger Outlets of Asheville on Wednesday (Dec. 3) inside Kimmel Arena.

Asheville jumped out to a 7-0 lead through the first minute and a half with two quick buckets from Nia Green and a three-pointer from Aileen Marquez, before South Carolina state finished the quarter on an 18-9 run to take an 18-16 lead to the second quarter.

Asheville took a 12-3 run to the media timeout of the second quarter with a three-pointer from Jamaria Freeman and a bucket from Green putting the Bulldogs ahead 21-18, before Green scored again to push the lead to five. Journee McDaniel connected on a three-pointer, before Deborah Orianegbena scored a layup to push the lead to seven. South Carolina State scored the final four points of the quarter to cut Asheville's lead to 28-25 headed to the break. Asheville held South Carolina State to just seven points in the second quarter.

South Carolina State began the third quarter on a 9-2 run that stretched to the media timeout, ultimately scoring 16 points in the frame to Asheville's 10 to take a 41-38 lead to the fourth quarter.

The teams traded scores to open the fourth quarter as a pair of McDaniel free throws tied the game at 43 with under seven minutes to play, before three straight South Carolina State buckets stretched their lead to seven at the halfway point of the quarter. The teams continued to trade scores over the next few minutes, as South Carolina State carried its six-point lead into the final minute. Jamaria Freeman scored a bucket to cut the deficit to four, before a South Carolina State bucket pushed the lead back to six with just 30 seconds left. Marquez knocked down a triple out of a timeout, before a South Carolina State turnover with 21 seconds left set the Bulldogs up for an opportunity to tie the game. Marquez knocked down yet another triple with time winding down to tie the game at 54, before the Bulldogs ended up in overtime for the first time this season.

Asheville outscored South Carolina State 17-0 on fast breaks in the game, while each team scored 26 points in the paint and seven points on second chances. Asheville also scored 18 points off turnovers and seven points off the bench in the game. Jamaria Freeman matched her career-high with 16 points in the game matching her career-best with five made field goals, while Green and Marquez each finished with 15 points with Green being just one off her career-high. Kristen McMillan chipped in three points in the game, while Trinity Fields and Clementina Odom each had two. McDaniel and Orianegbena each paced the rebounding effort with 12 boards on the day, with McDaniel just one off her career-high as Asheville out-rebounded South Carolina State 46-36 in the game. McDaniel also eclipsed 400 rebounds for her college career with the effort. Green completed her first double-double as a Bulldog with a career-high 10 rebounds in the game, while pulled in a career-high four boards in the game. Freeman and Marquez each also pulled down two rebounds in the game. McDaniel set a new career-high with a game-high eight assists on the day, while Green added three and Freeman had two.
