Women's Basketball Drops Non-Conference Contest to North Florida on Saturday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball dropped its non-conference contest to visiting North Florida on Saturday (Dec. 6) by a score of 76-61 inside Kimmel Arena.

Asheville began the game on a 12-4 run that stretched to the media timeout, including the first five points of the game on a triple from Aileen Marquez and a bucket from Jamaria Freeman. A layup from Deborah Orianegbena and two free throws from Nia Green stretched the lead further, before another three-pointer from Marquez pushed the lead to eight. North Florida responded out of the timeout and finished the first quarter on a 14-4 run to take an 18-16 lead to the second quarter.

North Florida won the second quarter 18-8 to take a 36-24 lead to the half.

The Ospreys opened the third quarter on a 12-4 run that stretched to the media timeout, before Asheville found their groove offensively in the frame. Each team scored 21 points in the period as North Florida led 57-45 headed to the fourth.

North Florida would push their lead to as many as 20 in the fourth quarter as they secured the win.

Asheville shot 44.9 percent (22-49) in the game, along with 35.7 percent (5-14) from long range and 66.7 percent (12-18) from the free throw line. Asheville outscored North Florida 28-22 off turnovers while also scoring 34 points in the paint, four points on second chances, 11 points on fast breaks and 10 points off the bench. Marquez paced the Bulldogs with 16 points including four three-pointers, while Green and Freeman each had 13 points in the game. Clementina Odom added seven points, while Orianegbena also had six and Journee McDaniel and Trinity Fields each had three. Freeman led the rebounding effort and matched her career-high with five boards, while Orianegbena had four and Odom set a new career-high with three rebounds. Green and McDaniel each had two boards in the game, while Marquez also had one. Freeman led the way with four assists in the game, while Green had two and Marquez also had one. Green led the way with four steals in the game, while Freeman had two and Marquez, Orianegbena, Odom, Kristen McMillan and Jaidyn Koerdt also each had one. McDaniel and Odom each registered one block in the game for Asheville.
