Women's Basketball Battles, but Falls at East Carolina on Sunday

GREENVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball battled, but fell at East Carolina on Sunday (Dec. 14) by a score of 75-61.

Asheville jumped out to an 11-5 lead to force an East Carolina timeout through the first five minutes. Aileen Marquez got the Bulldogs started with a three-pointer, before Jamaria Freeman tied the game at 5-5 with a bucket. Back-to-back triples from Freeman and Marquez stretched the lead to six to force the timeout. ECU outscored Asheville 6-3 in the latter stages of the first quarter as Asheville led 14-11 after one quarter.

The teams locked up at 14-14 early in the second quarter, while trading buckets until a small run from Asheville put the Bulldogs up six with under six minutes to play in the quarter. ECU got back within three with three minutes to play in the half, before the teams continuing to trade buckets left Asheville up 28-26 at the break.

Both teams turned it up offensively to start the second half, producing a third quarter that left ECU up 49-47 headed to the fourth. The teams played to a 28-28 tie early, before the teams would trade buckets up until the media break with ECU leading 36-32. Asheville went on a run to take a one-point lead with two and a half minutes left in the period, before ECU rallied to re-gain a five-point lead in the final seconds. D'yanna Maxey would run the length of the floor and bank in a three-pointer at the horn to get Asheville back within two.

After a bucket from Deborah Orianegbena tied the game at 49 early in the fourth quarter, ECU responded with a 9-2 run that put them ahead 58-51 with five and a half minutes to play. Back-to-back buckets from Journee McDaniel and Nia Green got Asheville back within three with just over four minutes to play, before the teams traded buckets to leave ECU up seven going into the final three minutes. ECU would turn up the pressure defensively proceed to finish the game on a run that included icing the game from the free throw line.

Asheville shot 37.3 percent (22-59) from the field, 31.8 percent (7-22) from three-point range and 83.3 percent (10-12) from the foul line in the game. Asheville outscored ECU 15-12 on second chances in the game, while the Bulldogs also scored 17 points off turnovers, 22 points in the paint, five points on fast breaks and 25 points off the bench. McDaniel led Asheville with her first double-double as a Bulldog with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Green (12 points), Freeman (11 points) and Marquez (10 points) were the other three Bulldogs to score in double figures in the game. Orianegbena and Maxey each added seven points in the game. McDaniel and Orianegbena each pulled down 10 rebounds apiece in the game, while Green had five rebounds and Marquez, Maxey and Clementina Odom each pulled down three rebounds in the game. Freeman also grabbed two rebounds in the contest. McDaniel and Freeman each paced the offense with five assists in the game, while Orianegbena and Maxey each had two helpers apiece. Freeman led the Bulldogs with two steals in the game, while Marquez and McDaniel each had one steal in the game. Green registered two blocks in the game, while Odom also had one rejection.
