STATESBORO, Ga. – Despite career days from Justin Wright and Kameron Taylor, UNC Asheville came up just short in a 93-90 setback at Georgia Southern on Saturday afternoon inside the Jack and Ruth Ann Hill Convocation Center.
Wright poured in a career-high 33 points on 11-of-15 shooting, including 4-for-5 from beyond the arc and a perfect 7-for-7 at the free-throw line. Taylor followed with a career-high 29 points, eight rebounds, and four assists, while Toyaz Solomon posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards.
The Bulldogs (0-2) led 39-32 at halftime, shooting 48.5% from the field and dominating inside with 24 first-half points in the paint. Asheville held the lead for the majority of the first half (17:54) before an 8-0 run with 9:47 left in the half gave Georgia Southern its first lead of the day (20-18). The Bulldogs retook the lead and held it for the remainder of the half, with Wright sinking Asheville's first triple of the game at the end of the frame to put Asheville ahead by seven at the break.
Wright went on to open the second half for Asheville with his second three-pointer, and followed with a layup, but an 11-2 run by the Eagles helped Georgia Southern take the lead 47-46 with 17:06 left in the second half. The Eagles went on to extend their lead out to eight points (76-68), but a trip to the free throw line from Wright helped cap an 8-1 run from Asheville and put the Bulldogs down by one (77-76).
Georgia Southern extended its lead out to seven points (90-83) with 48 seconds remaining, but a trip to the free throw line from Taylor, followed by a 3-pointer from Wright, brought the Eagles' lead down to two (90-88) with 12 seconds remaining. The Eagles were able to push their lead back out to four with a pair of free throws before Taylor sank a layup to make the score 92-90. With less than a second left on the clock, Georgia Southern went 1-for-2 at the free throw line, and the Bulldogs were unable to sink an equalizing shot as the Eagles walked away with a 93-90 victory.
Asheville finished the game shooting 55% (33-60) from the floor and 83% (20-24) at the line, while the Eagles (1-1) countered with a 45% shooting mark and a 28-of-39 effort at the stripe.
