Career Days Carry Bulldogs Past Warren Wilson for First Win of the Season

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball used several career days to power past Warren Wilson by a score of 108-44 Thursday night (Nov. 6) inside Kimmel Arena. It marked the first time for Asheville hitting the century mark since a 100-36 win over Warren Wilson back on Dec. 1, 2021.
The teams played a back and forth first quarter, with both teams starting a bit slow on offense with Asheville leading 9-8 at the halfway point. The Bulldogs then clamped down and closed the quarter on a 16-9 run through the last 4:44 of the period. The run began with a bucket from Kamaria Gipson and a Jaidyn Koerdt three-pointer, before Deborah Orianegbena stretched the lead to six with a pair of free throws. The lead grew with Trinity Fields knocking down two at the line and a bucket from Nia Green, before a jumper from Koerdt and a score from Jamaria Freeman closed the quarter.
The Bulldogs pulled away in the second quarter, holding Warren Wilson to just 12 points while putting up 35 of their own. The Bulldogs opened the quarter on a 23-6 run that stretched to the media timeout, before scoring another 15 while holding Warren Wilson to just six more points in the frame. The run began with an old-fashioned three-point play from Green followed up by a three-pointer from Koerdt. Orianegbena and Freeman scored on the next two possessions, before Sara Yarnell would make her impact felt with eight points and five rebounds in the quarter.
The Bulldogs continued to pull away in the third quarter, holding Warren Wilson to just seven points while scoring 27 in the frame. Asheville opened the quarter on a 17-7 run through the media timeout, before closing the quarter on a 10-0 run. Koerdt began the run that spanned the final two minutes of the frame with a bucket, before Gipson contributed to the run with a score. Yarnell and Orianegbena would score on the next two possessions, before Clementina Odom scored the final bucket of the quarter.
Asheville held Warren Wilson to just nine points in the fourth quarter, scoring 21 on the home side to bring the contest to its final score.
Asheville shot 47 percent (39-83) from the field in the game, along with 37.5 percent (9-24) from beyond the arc and 72.4 percent (21-29) from the charity stripe. Asheville also out-scored Warren Wilson 42-4 off turnovers, 58-24 in the paint, 16-3 on second chances, 29-7 on fast breaks and 64-22 off the bench in the game. Koerdt paced all scorers with a career-high 19 points on a career-best 5-8 from beyond the arc and a career-high 7-12 from the field, while Green matched her career-high with 15 points and Orianegbena set a new career-high with 14 points on a career-high 6-11 shooting. Gipson matched her career high with 14 points, while Clementina Odom registered a career-high 12 points, while Yarnell posted a career-high 12 points on a career-best 4-9 shooting. Aileen Marquez added nine points in the game, while Freeman scored a career-high seven points in the contest with a career-best three field goals made. Trinity Fields matched her career-high with five points, while Journee McDaniel added one point. Asheville out-rebounded Warren Wilson 59-25, paced by a game-high and career-high 14 rebounds from Yarnell to complete her first collegiate double-double. Orianegbena pulled down nine rebounds in the game, while Koerdt and Green each grabbed seven rebounds with Koerdt registering a new career-high. Gipson pulled down five rebounds in the game, while Freeman grabbed a career-high four and Marquez and McDaniel each had three. Odom pulled in a career-high two rebounds, while Fields also had one. Fields paced the Bulldogs with a career-high 10 assists on the night, one off of Julie Thompson's school record set in 1983-84. Freeman dished out a career-high five assists on the night, while Orianegbena dished out a career-high four assists on the night. Marquez and Yarnell each registered three assists with Yarnell notching a career-high, while Green had two assists and McDaniel and Gipson each had one. Freeman paced the Bulldogs with a career-high six steals in the game, while Green and Marquez each had four steals in the game with Marquez notching a new career-high. Yarnell swiped a career-best three steals in the game, while Odom and Koerdt each had two steals in the game, while Odom set her career-high and Koerdt matched hers. Odom, Gipson and Taliya Council each registered a block in the game for Asheville.
