Rally Falls Short for Women's Basketball at North Carolina Central

DURHAM, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball saw its rally fall short at North Carolina Central on Thursday (Nov. 13), as the Bulldogs dropped their non-conference contest 66-53.
 
The teams started slow offensively in the first quarter, trading buckets through the first 10 minutes as North Carolina Central led just 13-9 after 10 minutes of play. A low-scoring second quarter saw North Carolina Central outlast Asheville 13-11 in the period to take a 26-20 to the break. North Carolina Central stretched its lead to as many as 13 in the frame, before Asheville closed the half on an 8-0 run in the final two minutes. Free throws from Nia Green began the run, before a Green layup off an Eagle turnover cut the deficit back to single digits. An old-fashioned three-point play from Jamaria Freeman got the Bulldogs back within six as the teams went to the half.
 
Each team scored 18 points in the third quarter, as North Carolina Central held its their six-point advantage headed to the fourth quarter. The teams traded scores early in the period as the Eagles pushed their lead back into double digits, before a string of Asheville free throws got the deficit back down to six at the halfway point of the frame. The teams would trade scores through the remainder of the quarter as North Carolina Central led 44-38 headed to the final 10 minutes.
 
North Carolina Central would outscore Asheville 22-15 in the fourth quarter to bring the game to its final score. The teams traded scores early in the fourth quarter as Asheville would get back within three with four minutes gone, then within two just past the halfway point. The Eagles closed the game on an 18-7 run through the final five and a half minutes.
 
Asheville shot 28.3 percent (13-46) from the field in the loss, 27.3 percent (3-11) from beyond the arc and 62.3 percent (24-38) from the charity stripe. Asheville outscored North Carolina Central 18-17 off the bench, also scoring 11 points off turnovers, 18 points in the paint, seven second-chance points and nine points off fast breaks in the game. Freeman scored a career-high 16 points to lead the Bulldogs shooting a career-high 10-13 from the foul line, while Journee McDaniel also had 10 points in the game to eclipse 400 points for her college career. Green added seven points in the game, while Trinity Fields collected a new career-high with six points in the game. Taliya Council added five points for Asheville, while Kamaria Gipson had four points and Jaidyn Koerdt had two. Aileen Marquez, Clementina Odom and Deborah Orianegbena each had one point in the game. McDaniel paced the Bulldogs with eight rebounds in the game, while Orianegbena had seven and Green pulled down six boards in the contest. Marquez, Gipson and Sara Yarnell each had three rebounds in the game, while Council and Koerdt each had two. Freeman and Fields each had one board in the game. Green matched her career-high with three assists in the game, while Freeman, McDaniel, Odom and Orianegbena each had one helper in the game. McDaniel, Marquez and Fields each swiped two steals in the game, while Green, Council and Gipson each had one. McDaniel matched her career-high with three blocks in the game, while Gipson had two and Council and Orianegbena each posted one rejection in the game.
