Bulldogs Earn Mountain Rivalry Win at Western Carolina Wednesday Night

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball earned its second win of the season in the Mountain Rivalry with a 67-50 win at Western Carolina on Wednesday night (Nov. 19). This marks Asheville's fourth straight win in Cullowhee dating back to 2019-20.

The Bulldogs opened the first quarter on an 11-4 run through the first 5:34, with three different scorers pushing Asheville to a 7-0 lead through four minutes of play. Buckets on back-to-back possessions from Kristen McMillan would push the lead to 11-4, before Western Carolina closed the quarter on a 9-4 run as Asheville led 17-13 after 10 minutes of play.

Asheville won the second quarter 18-13 to take a 35-26 lead to the half. Asheville again opened the quarter on an 11-4 run through the first 4:18, with Nia Green scoring the first points of the quarter. Journee McDaniel would counter a Western Carolina bucket with a triple, before two free throws and an old-fashioned three-point play from Green would push the lead to 12 through three and a half minutes of play. The lead fluctuated between 10 and 12 over the next few minutes, before a Western Carolina layup beat the horn to have the lead sit at nine headed to the break.

Western Carolina closed the gap to seven through two minutes of play in the third quarter, before Asheville would stretch the lead back up to 15 three and a half minutes to play. An and-one from McMillan before a layup from Green stretched the lead back to 10, before a triple from Aileen Marquez pushed the lead back to 13. Free throws from McMillan pushed the lead to 17 late in the quarter, before Western Carolina was able to cut the deficit to 12 to end the quarter.

Western Carolina began the fourth quarter on a run that brought Asheville's lead back to single digits with four minutes to play in the period, but Asheville was able to hold the lead until the final horn.

Asheville shot 42.2 percent (19-42) from the floor in the game, along with 38.9 percent (7-18) from long range and 59.5 percent (22-37) from the foul line in the game. Asheville outscored Western Carolina 20-17 off turnovers, 17-7 on fast breaks and 31-10 off the bench in the game while also scoring 20 points in the paint and five points on fast breaks. Marquez and McMillan paced the offense with a game-high 16 points, with McMillan registering a career-high to include 8-9 from the foul line in the game. Green added 11 points in the game, while Journee McDaniel had nine and D'yanna Maxey had eight. Jamaria Freeman added four points in the game, while Jaidyn Koerdt also had three. Asheville handled Western Carolina 35-28 on the glass, paced by seven rebounds from Green and five each from McMillan and Freeman with Freeman posting a new career-high. McDaniel, Clementina Odom and Koerdt each had two rebounds in the game while Marquez, Maxey, Kamaria Gipson and Deborah Orianegbena each had one. Green, McDaniel and Freeman each had two assists apiece in the game, while Trinity Fields, McMillan, Maxey and Taliya Council each had one. Green led the Bulldogs with three steals in the game, while McMillan and Freeman each had two and Marquez, McDaniel, Maxey, Council and Gipson each had one. Green, McDaniel, Gipson and Odom each had one block in the game for Asheville.
