Women's Basketball Drops Non-Conference Contest to App State on Saturday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball dropped its non-conference to App State on Saturday (Nov. 22) at Kimmel Arena by a score of 64-40.
 
The two teams started slow offensively, with App State leading just 8-3 at the halfway point of the first quarter. App State stretched its lead to seven with three and a half minutes to play in the period, before the teams traded buckets to end the period as App State led 17-13.
 
App State scored 21 points in the second quarter to UNC Asheville's 10 to stretch their lead into double digits, taking a 38-23 lead to the break.
 
Asheville would clamp down defensively in the third quarter holding App State to just 12 points, scoring 11 as a team in the period. App State would hold Asheville to just six points in the fourth quarter while scoring 14 to bring the contest to its final score.
 
Asheville shot 28.3 percent (15-53) from the field, including just 19.0 percent (4-21) from long range and 54.5 percent (6-11) from the foul line in the game. Asheville outscored App State 35-13 off the bench in the game, while also scoring 13 points off turnovers, 14 points in the paint, five points on second chances and nine on fast breaks. Kristen McMillan and Jamaria Freeman each paced the offense with eight points, while Jaidyn Koerdt had seven and Kamaria Gipson had six. Aileen Marquez added five points, while D'yanna Maxey and Clementina Odom each had three points in the game. Deborah Orianegbena led the rebounding effort with six boards on the day, while Freeman matched her career-high with five. Journee McDaniel grabbed four rebounds in the game, while Green, McMillan and Gipson each had three boards. Maxey hauled in two rebounds in the game, while Koerdt and Odom each had one. Freeman led the way with three assists in the game, while Fields and Koerdt each had two and Orianegbena, Green, Gipson, Maxey and Taliya Council each had one. Marquez, Orianegbena, Freeman and Sara Yarnell each had one steal in the game, while Green and Council each posted one block.  
 
The Bulldogs return to the hardwood on Tuesday (Nov. 25) to host Wofford in non-conference action. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m. from Kimmel Arena, with video, live stats, audio and tickets available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
