Women's Basketball Drops Season Opener to Mercer Monday Night

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball dropped its 2025-26 season opener to Mercer inside Kimmel Arena on Monday (Nov. 3) by a score of 48-39.

The teams both got off to slow starts in the first quarter, with the majority of points coming off free throws in the frame. Mercer led 19-9 after 10 minutes of play.

UNC Asheville began the second quarter on a 7-0 run through the first three minutes, starting with three free throws from Aileen Marquez followed by a bucket from D'yanna Maxey and one from Nia Green. Asheville would continue to drive hard to the rack, ultimately tying the game at 20 from the free throw line. Mercer would close the quarter on a 5-1 run to take a 25-21 lead to the half.

Mercer controlled the third quarter from start to finish, outscoring Asheville 14-2 in the frame to take a 39-23 lead to the fourth.

Asheville outscored Mercer 16-9 in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough in the game as the final horn sounded.

Asheville shot 22.2 percent (10-45) from the field in the game, including 2-11 from long range (18.2 percent) and 89.5 percent (17-19) from the foul line in the game. Asheville also nine points off turnovers, 14 points in the paint, seven second-chance points, four points off fast breaks and 11 points off the bench. Marquez led the Bulldogs  in her Asheville debut with 12 points on the night to bring her career total to 300, while Green and Taliya Council each scored six points in their Bulldog debut. Journee McDaniel added five points in her Bulldog debut, while Clementina Odom scored three points in her Asheville debut. Maxxey, Jaidyn Koerdt and Jamaria Freeman each scored two points in their Asheville debut, while Trinity Fields added one point. Asheville pulled down 37 rebounds as a team in the game, led by a game-high 11 from McDaniel along with six from Green. Marquez grabbed four boards in the game, while Freeman finished her debut with three and Koerdt added two rebounds in the game. Odom, Maxey, Council and Fields each had one rebound in the game. Green marked a new career-high with three assists in the game, while Marquez, McDaniel and Freeman each registered their first assists in an Asheville uniform. Green paced the Bulldogs with two steals in the game, while Marquez, Council, Fields and Deborah Orianegbena each had one steal in the game. Green also matched her career-high with a game-high three blocks, while Odom had two and McDaniel had one. Â
